MCE 2004 and Samsung HDTV 1080i
Posted by Brad Hammers on November 3rd, 2005

Hi!

Running MCE 2004 on Gateway 500 XL 3 Ghz, w/ nVidia 6200 FX (ForceWare
81.85) into Samsung HDTV 1080i 30" Widescreen. Output to TV is clone mode
over DVI cable connection. (Have tried Dual Display - doesn't work)

--bear with me, hard to describe--

I want to fill up my entire TV screen with signal from MCE. As it stands,
output is in standard 4:3 ratio, and want to customize output signal to
widescreen. I've tried all manner of settings, but can't do anything
practical. Here's the real problem: when I watch widescreen formatted
movies, through MCE, on my TV (since the signal is in 4:3) the widescreen
view of the movie is very small (like watching the movie on a ~18" TV). Want
to blow up widescreen video so that it fills my entire TV screen. How to do
this? Is this possible?

--about to get even harder to understand--

Once, I had the output clone signal set to where MCE took up the entire TV
screen, and full screen video stretched from end to end, but the video was
stretched lengthwise, and didn't occupy the upper and lower portions of the
screen, i.e. - movie was stretched horizontally (not a pretty picture). Is
there a way to do this again (not sure how I did it in the first place) but
also to stretch video vertically so movie fills entire screen?

Kudos to anyone who can decipher what I've tried to describe. A free
Ferrari to anyone who can really help me. (j/k about the Ferrari)

I would suspect you need a different video card that will output native
widescreen format. Most video cards are setup for standard TV's and
monitors that are 4:3 ratio. Look into a high quality video card for this
use.

It could also be a driver, try checking the NVidia web site. You may need a
widescreen tv driver in the pc.

Since Widescreen PC moniots have now bee around for several years all video
cards have also been capable of generating widescren outputs for years.
If your Samsung is like my Samsung HDTV it may only acceopt 480p, 720p, or
1080i over DVI. It sounds like you are sending widescreen video letterboxed
into 4:3 format and then with the TV side set to 4:3 you end up with black
borders on top, bottom and the sides. You probably nedd to Zoom the image
on the PC side and then send it in 720p format.
