MCE 2005 and DIRECTV
Posted by chewdoggie on April 12th, 2006

I have an alienware DHS-321 system running MCE2005 with an ATI Elite Wonder
card (standard analog) and a ATI HDTV card. Ever since I got Directv I have
not been able to use my MCE tv functions as the directv model (D10) does not
work with it. I know there are directv users out there that are running it
successfully with MCE...I just need to know what model DIRECTV receiver to
get. Directv has been NO help...they just want to sell me their DVR
receiver. I like MCE and would prefer to continue using it...just need a few
model #'s that I can hunt down and buy. Someone please help me its been over
1 year...

I have Dish, and in researching which capture card to get I have found that
you will not be able to have the card tune in yourr Direct TV/Dish channels,
you will need to have the coax or s-video output go from the receiver to your
tuner card.

Hope this helps.

Ok, so let me make sure I understand you correctly...no matter what receiver
I have I will not be able to use my media remote to change channels on my
Directv receiver...using the IR blaster function? I will be able to sync the
MCE channel line up to the Directv and it will record...but it won't be like
it was when I had straight cable to my tuner card. If I am missing something
please clue me in...I really want to use my PC again for DVR functionality.

No you misunderstood, as Paul stated in his post you must use coax or
preferrably S-video from your direct TV STB to your tuner card in order to
be able to have your remote and the IR blaster contron\l the channels that
your STB is sending to your MCE system.

Ok...already did that and I know via thegreenbutton.com that the D-10 model
is incompaitable with MCE 2005...so now I back to my question again, what
model # receiver is everyone else using sucessfully? My setup with the coax
to the tuner card is setup exactly as per the instructions.

D10 is a generic model for standard def directv. The full model numbers are
d10-100, -200, -300 and -400. The -### actually is an indication of what
major company made it for directv. The only D10 I know with some difficulty
with mce is the D10-300. Unfortunately you cannot pick the exact d10 model
when ordering from drectv directly.

My recommendation is to go into a store that sells them and get one you
know the exact model # of. Many major electronic stores have directv
recievers in stock. I am not sure if there is a listing of exact model on
the box, you may need to make sure you can return it and open it in the car
and read the label found on the bottom of the unit.

I have personally used D10s for many months before replacing them with older
hdtv models.

May I ask Bryan Socha a question here? (hope so)

Just any advice on how/where I can get brought up to "speed" (so to speak),
on MCE, receivers, and all this. I have a new Dell MCE and despise the
Cable/Dish networks, so would "love" over the air HD broadcasts... But I
have no any other hardware (yet).

But book recommendations, or even Web, I'll go check out "Frys" or BestBuy
but those places are quite hectic...
