- MCE Over 64-bit XP?
- Posted by Doctor Kimble on October 27th, 2005
If the PC meets all the requirements, will MCE install and work well on top
of 64-bit XP, or do I need to wait for Vista (Hey MS! How about a beta
invite :-)

There's no way to easily separate out the MCE bits, so you can't install
just the MCE bits over XP even in the 32-bit world. In the 64-bit world,
you'd still need drivers for the tuner cards, and a dvd decoder, and there's
currently no 64-bit versions of these items. You'll need to wait for
Vista...

However, 32 bit MCE will install and work well on 64bit hardware with the
32bit drivers.
I have my 64 bit MCE system set up as a dual boot, only booting out to XP 64
when I need the raw speed of XP64 and no recordings are scheduled to occur
for the next few hours on MCE.

how did you setup the Dual Boot? This sounds snazy.

Just install x64 on a second partition. At startup, you get a screen with a
choice of which operating systems to boot into.

Cool, now that were on the subject of partitions. Before any of all this, I
had screwed up royally.
I have 2 harddrives, I moved all my files on to 1 so I could install a fresh
copy of xpmce2005 on One...
Well I accidentally deleted the partition on the harddrive that has all my
files...
DOWWWW
In my Genuis thought, I put the xp cd in it so I could reinstall xp with out
deleting my files and it wanted to format my drive, I SAID NO
I found the recovery portion on the xp cd, and I ran it. well I found a
thing called FIXBOOT. I figured ok.
Well it installed a FAT patition. I still cant access my files.(there still
there) and I cant install the o.s on the FAT partition..
Any ideas on how I can install the OS on this harddrive so I can access all
my files again..
THANKS A MILLION

You don't want to install *anything* on that drive. That action would
have the effect of making it much harder to recover.
You need a good recovery program that boots from a CD and writes
NOTHING to the hard drive.
I have no idea if such a program exists, so this may not be a helpful
suggestion.
Or - I just thought of this. You could move the drive as a secondary
drive into another computer and run recovery software from the other
computer. Don't do anything that lets it write on the drive (like set
up a Recycle Bin).
Good luck, and I wish you great Googling!
