- No TV signal & loss of remote functionality after power failure
- Posted by bruiser on February 22nd, 2006
Woke up this morning with a blinking digital clock, so I knew there had been
a power failure overnight. Not very long, since VCRs & coffee maker didn't
need to be reset. But both computers felt it.
The Media PC had been on standby (S3). After starting it up, I found it
could no longer detect the TV signal, nor does it recognize commands from
the remote control. The USB mouse works fine and every other aspect of MCE
appears to be OK. Device Manager shows no problems with the 2 tuners
(AverMedia MPEG A169). I've confirmed that there is a TV signal via the
S-Video ouput of my STB.
I restored (twice) a good image of my system drive, but the problems
persist. Did this power outage fry some hardware? Or is there some sort of
reset I don't know about. I went into the BIOS settings and from what I
remember everything looks OK.
Help! Anything I can do, or am I looking at a service call?

Interesting. No idea what could be going on...sounds like there's indeed a
video signal coming from your STB? Can you bypass the STB and feed the
signal (analog) into your tuners? Did any of the other household electronics
get fried?
Good argument here to get a small UPS for the MCE box.

For anyone interested: it was suggested to me to unplug the computer, wait a
couple of minutes and then reconnect the power and restart. That fixed
everything. Don't know why exactly, but it worked.

That's certainly really weird. I could imagine doing that if you also
removed the motherboard's battery, but not sure what a power off would
accomplish.

Well, unplugging would completely unpower the system, as opposed to just
turning it off, since most PC maintain power to the MB when shut off.
However, not sure what would need to be completely off to fix the problem
unless something about the soft switch of the power supply needed to be
"reset" by the full power off. I've occasionally had systems that wouldn't
come one until I physically unplugged them.

I too have had problems since a power outage but have never recovered. I
have purchased a new tuner card and sound card just to make sure everything
was ok but it still cannot find a signal when resuming from an S3 standby. I
click on Live TV and there is a signal! I'm jealous that you solved it while
I am still in signal hell. By the way, I have re-formatted 4x, flashed the
bios, and updated all drivers.
