- Problem playing DVDs
- Posted by Norman Kaye on February 19th, 2008
If I create a DVD from a TV programme recorded via Media Center I can watch
it on the PC throught Media Center or via Media Player but NOT in my stand
alone DVD player.
I get the message "unrecognised disc" or "not a valid disc".
Can anyone tell me why and is there anything I can do about it?
Thank you.

DVD players do not normally support DVR-MS which the MS records in. It is
encrypted by Media Centre to prevent you doing this sort of thing.
If you want to play on your dvd you have to decrypt the files before
burning. To find out how to do this go to www.thegreenbutton.com they have
many threads on this subject. Good luck.

DVR-MS files are standard MPEG2 encoded files with a wrapper which is an
extra record at the beginning file which contains all of the MC unique
information this record does not meet MPEG2 standards so the suffix of the
file is changed. When MC plays a DVR-MS it just removes the first record
and pass the file to a standard MPEG2 decoder. The green button links
probably point to a program that will do the same thing in order to
"convert" a DVR-MS file to a MPEG2 file.
