This could be an issue with the reslution support of either your
television or hte cable you are using.
i had a ton of issues getting my TV to support a higher resolution - i
think it turned out it was the capabilities of my video card.

Please list your video card/drivers version and television. If had to
guess, more than likely your have an older HDTV/EDTV. If this is the
case, then the television is basically telling the video drivers-"Hey,
this is my resolution, take it or leave it" . Although, it may very
well be something else.

As he states in his original post "My desktop is fine (at 1280x720), it's
just MCE" I don't think there is a problem with the display/graphics
card/driver it's MCE that is the issue.
I believe there are two approaches to this.
1) There is a registry entry you can make to stop MCE changing
resolutions/refresh rates when it loads.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media
Center]'EnableRefreshRateChange'=dword:00000000
2)Set MCE to use the correct resolution.
I am not by my MCE box but AFAIR
If you rerun the MCE display setup and choose the appropriate settings.
e.g. flat panel, 16:9, HD it should ask you what resolution you want to use.

I've been having this exact same problem with an HP Media Center PC and an
HP LCD TV hooked up via DVI. The desktop works fine at 1280x720, but when I
full screen Media Center it drops the resolution to 1024x768 (according to
the TV). When I run the Media Center TV configuration, it says my
resolution is 720x480 and that it probably isn't the right resolution. I
then configure it for flat panel, 16:9 widescreen, and pick 1280x720
(widescreen) as the resolution. My TV flashes and the OSD indicates a
1280x720 resolution, then immediately it switches back to 1024x768. Bummer.
I'll try out that reg key and see what happens.
