Sound only from Surround Speakers....
Posted by Orgbrat on September 29th, 2005

Hi folks,
I am using a Intel D865PERLK motherboard in my HTPC and a Yamaha HTR-5750
receiver connected with a digital cable from the SPIDF port on motherboard
to the digital port on the receiver. I also have DVD player and Digital
Cable box connected through same receiver. I am outputing to a full set (5)
of Klipsch speakers. My problem is that when I output sound from the digital
cable box, the external Sony RDR-GX7 DVD player or the HTPC internal DVD
player the sound seems to come from all the speakers. But if I am using
Windows and the Windows Media Player or playing back a recorded TV show thru
MCE 2005, I only get sound from the rear surround sound speakers. I have
tried to go through and make sure that all the windpw's settings are set
correctly. Why would MCE 2005 play a movie DVD correctly but not the recorded
TV show? Has any one got any suggestions?

I can't speak for media center, but it's worth checking to see if your
settings for WM Player correspond to mine. Sorry if you've already checked
these and I'm repeating your effort, but you didn't say exactly the settings
you've chosen :

If you open media player, go to the menu, choose Tools->Options->Devices.
Click on the Speakers icon, then Properties. Direct Sound audio device
should be selected.

At this screen, you might optionally want to enable SPDIF of WM Pro audio,
if your Yamaha and sound card support it (and you have a cable !).

Now click the advanced button, it'll open on the Volume tab.

Click the Advanced button, and ensure "5.1 surround sound speakers is
selected". OK that. You should then have setting values for Speaker Volume
for Left+Right listed here : I can't see any place to balance the speaker
output directly from the sound control window (it could be device specific
though).

HTH
