Tuner Card Not Detected and WMC Reciever Errors - HELP :-P
Posted by Mcfly on February 26th, 2008

I have a x86 Vista Home Premium 32bit box with 4GB Ram, Nvidia chipset and
ATI Radeon video card and am trying to set up WMC for TV. I've installed an
AverMedia M780 internal combo PCIe card with the latest drivers (x.22). From
both the manufacturer and the thousands of users posting on the Green Button,
I know for a fact that this card is WMC compatible and (obviously) Vista
compatible.

When setting up WMC, I continue to get the dreaded "tuner card not
detected...." error, and subsequently get the "Windows Media Center Reciever
has Stopped Working" pop up after I've shut down WMC. I've tracked down two
(2) hot fix patches on the Microsoft's site for each error, installed both,
and there is no difference. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the card
physically and using H/W Mgr...no difference.

Interestingly, the AverMedia software I installed after encountering this
issue not only sees the card, but immediately allowed me to scan and then
watch both QAM and analog stations. I've posted this question on "the Green
Button" at least four times and noone seems able to provide a fix. I have
stumped AverMedia, as their answer is to back up the machine and reinstall
Windows from scratch. Not an option in my mind.

What the heck is wrong with WMC/Vista??? Ideas and solutions welcomed!

Digital tuners can be overloaded where as analog tuners can not. When a
signal is too strong on a channel for a digital tuner it does not receive
anything,

Uh, thanks, I think...Say whu???

I'm trying to reconcile your info with what I was asking. Are you saying
that too strong a signal prevents WMC from seeing the card? If so, that is
hard to digest.

Sorry my above post was meant for another thread.

In response to your posting.
Regretfully Vista MC does not have general support for QAM digital only ATSC
digital at this time.
However, MC should be able to set up your analog tuner cable connection.
I suggest that you try downgrading to 2GB of memory and see if that makes
any difference.
What driver release are you using for your Radon card?

I realize the QAM issue with WMC, but AverMedia can export clear QAM into
WMC... i'll cross that bridge if I ever get close to it. ATI drivers are
8.451.0.0, just installed 3 weeks ago. However, I can't see how the graphics
card could have anything to do with WMC not seeing the tuner card.
Especially when I know the card is functioning. I am seriously considering
doing a full back up then sys restore.

Thanks again!

I forgot that an AverMedia add in could emulate a ATSC tuner when receiving
a QAM signal.
The Graphics card information is important since if the decoder you are
using has hardware acceleration enabled that that functionality is supported
by your graphics card and its drivers.
Also if you have installed any other decoders such as non current Nero
decoders that they may have corrupted your decoding ability.
