When is MCE going to be able to use DVB satellite tuner cards???
Posted by redeye_joe on October 16th, 2005

Does anyone know of any info about MCE and DVB's, I know that there is many
other programs that work with them but not MCE, like My Theatre. How hard
would it be to intergrate My theatre into MCE or can I manually do it
somehow. Any info would be helpful.
thanks

AFAIK MCE works with any DVB tuner card for use in Europe with DVB statisons
that has .BDA Drivers.

AFAIK is an abbreviation for As Far As I Know.
There are not stations trasmitting digital with DVB format in North America
just ATSC formats.

There is from Echostar (dishnetwork and Expressvu) work with the DVB-S cards,
but I dont think MCE will scan for US Sats, need to manually change the
frequency or something to get it to find the channels.
Where can I get the drivers that make MCE see the DVB card?

You have to get the DBA drivers for a DVB card from the manufacturer of the
card. Ansd as I stated before there are no networks in North America
transmitting DVB-T at this time the cards are only for use outside of North
America. I have read that a TV station in Western Canada may start DVB
tranmissions next year. Even if E* transmitted using DVB_S you could not
receive them since all E* tranmission are encrypted and the DVB-S cards only
work with uncrypted transmissions.

Contrary to what JW said, MCE does NOT currently support DVB-S cards (nor
for that matter DVB-C cards).

DVB-T = DVB over terrestrial (over the air)
DVB-S = Satellite
DVB-C = Cable

It is possible Direct TV may be going the (or already be) DVB-S route (since
it is now owned by Rupert Murdoch who also owns Sky).

Us European's are positively frothing at the mouth over the huge length of
time we are having to wait for DVB-S (and DVB-C) support. I personally
REFUSE to buy MCE and use it with an analog connection to a DVB-S set top
box (analog connections cannot do HD, surround sound, etc. etc. etc.). As
has been indicated plenty of other applications (e.g. MediaPortal) do
support both DVB-S and DVB-C (with and without CI support for encrypted
channels). Part of the reason us Europeans are so upset is that European set
top boxes typically do NOT have FireWire interfaces (so that rules out
another method of getting the digital recordings).

Some DVB-S manufacturers having also got pissed off by Microsoft's failure
to directly support DVB-S cards have developed a hack as a workaround. They
do this by making the DVB-S card look like a DVB-T card to the Microsoft MCE
software. However this approach I believe severely restricts what channels
you can use.

The general consensus seems to be that Microsoft will FINALLY support DVB-S
and DVB-C cards officially with the Vista release of MCE, but that is still
at least 14 months away!!! It is possible that Microsoft have been waiting
for the much tougher DRM in Vista before supporting these additional digital
services.

By then we may have been using DVB-S2 for nearly a year! DVB-S2 is an
enhanced version which is being (will be) used throughout Europe for HD
satellite broadcasts. Sky's HD service is launching in the Spring using
DVB-S2 and MPEG4.

While there are other things MCE does not [yet] support, and some things I
know will be better in a years time (e.g. Intel dual core CPUs), the lack of
DVB-S support is THE single feature that prevents me getting an MCE system.

I stand corrected I was confused about which DVB-x cards had BDA drivers and
which were supported by MCE..Is it correct then to say that only DVB-T cards
with BDA drivers are supported?

That's correct. Microsoft only officially support DVB-T cards with BDA
drivers. Despite the fact that DVB-S and DVB-C cards can come with BDA
drivers they will not directly work with MCE (excluding the limited hack I
mentioned).

DVBs and encrypted channels is now possible in MCE with a Technotrend Budget
PCI DVBs card.
