DIR«sees» almost 2 GB free in a 500 MB partition! What is wrong?
Posted by Jean Castonguay on March 2nd, 2005

Here is an edited output of three DIR commands on C: (502 MB), D:
(1004 MB), and E: (1200 MB).

epm: F:\ >dir c:

Répertoire C:\

C 1 05-02-28 17:28
2097119 K octet(s) disponible(s)

epm: F:\ >dir d:

Répertoire D:\

D 1 05-02-28 17:28
2097053 K octet(s) disponible(s)

epm: F:\ >dir e:

Répertoire E:\

E 1 05-02-28 17:29
1258225 K octet(s) disponible(s)

Why does DIR «see» almost 2 GB free in the first two partitions?
Why does DIR give the right value for the third partition?

I tried to reformat, and FORMAT «sees» the C partition as an almost 2
GB sized partition!
Where does FORMAT pick up the partition size?
How can I correct the problem? I did not use the /L option because I
was afraid FORMAT would format beyond the partition boundary.

There is no doubt about the partition sizes. Here is the output of
both FDISK and DFSOS2.

epm: F:\ >fdisk /query

I studied the partition table chain with the help of the WALK command
output of DFSOS2, and it appears OK to me.

What is wrong?

Let me add that my machine BIOS does not see beyond 8 GB. Could it be
part of the problem?

Thank you very much in advance for any suggestion.
