Does anyone have Pilot Desktop 1.0 for Windows 3.x?
Posted by Richard Steiner on October 28th, 2004

I was able to obtain a copy from Palm's web site, but it *requires* a
real copy of Windows 3.x to install and I only have Warp 4 and Win95
(which the installer explicitly detects and refuses to work under).

Does someone have a working installation somewhere that they could ZIP
up and send to me?

Hey Rich! Did you ever get a response on this?

After thinking about it, I checked an old computer. Sure enough,
Pilot Desktop 1.0 is still on there. It is installed, but I don't
remember using it. Something about waiting for an OS/2 version...
then having my PDA device get outdated... then having the computer
replaced. (Haven't used this computer since 1999)

The program runs, starts up fine in WinOS2, but I have no current Palm
type device with which to test it, therefore no guarantees. As I
recall, it insisted on being installed on C:

Speak up if interested.

Does this help? If you need individual files, let me know.

It does say you need a Win 3.1 system but it could be on a different
machine. I can always grab the required files for you...

Great resource which I'd forgotten about.

Must have been that win32s stuff that was giving me the shivers while
trying to recall how I installed this years ago.

We appreciate your continuing alertness!

I didn't send it that long ago. :-)

I'm still using my little m105 with OS/2. It's slow and it's black and
while, but it still does its job pretty well.

I might be. Stay tuned! :-)

Yes, that's a good recipe once I run the SETUP program, but I'm afraid
I can't do that. It won't run at all under Win95, and under WinOS2 it
threatens to overwrite my already working Win32s 1.25a setup.

I don't have access to Windows 3.1 right now -- I have a copy, but it's
still packed in a box somewhere, and it probably won't become available
until we move to a permanent address here.

What I probably need is for someone to run the installation in a real
Win 3.1 environment, gather up the files into a ZIP file, and send me
a copy so I can put them in their proper places according to the above
instructions...

OK, I can set Win 3.1 up on a spare machine and do that. Email me
privately if you would like this...any details etc. such as might be
needed during setup (I guess you know those from the manual). Anyway,
email me....reply address via spamcop is valid.

Mine's an IBM Aptiva M70, 133Mhz which was purchased with <gasp> OS/2

driver beyond 28K, I'd probably still be using it.

I know Bob will probably provide your best assistance, but as a point
of history, I just found a crackly, yellowed "Pilot Desktop 1.0"
folder with sweat (maybe tears) droplets all over it, more or less
documenting my install trail. In it is a print out of the original
3com os2help.html document, plus an IBM internal page from Barry Bryan
describing how he did it.

Seems I had problems with not only WIN32s, but also with VW32S
settings, MSVCRT20.CLL, and SIO serial driver settings. Whatever I
ended up with did work... still works.

The good old days haven't changed much, huh?

I've just managed to get Palm Desktop 3.1.1 working Odin 20041012 under
Warp 4 FP 15, and it seems to HotSynch to my m105 just fine via COM2,
so I might not have any need for the older 16-bit version.

It also looks like the Palm Desktop add-on that came with my PalmPix
camera works under Odin, so that's even better! :-)

Both packages were able to install under Odin, too. Very nice.
