- Inkjet printer

Anyone know if the Epson C86 is usable with OS/2? Daughter called
with a paniced "Dad, my printer died and I have a paper due" message
and I haven't had time to research this, so readily available (cheap)
alternatives that might show up at a local Staples, Comp USA, or Best
Buy type store would be appreciated.

i550, i850, and i950 which are last year's models and are no longer
sold, at least in stores, but several people here have reported that
those drivers also work with this year's Canon i560. Do a Google search
on that for more info. I have a Canon i850 that does a really nice job
and the Canon ink cartridges last longer and are cheaper to replace than
the other brands. There is also a Win-OS2 driver that works with the
Canon i850 so it might work with some of the other Canon models as well.
The Canon's are also very quick to print, with very little load on the
system, and very quiet.

I second David's recomendation. I bought a refurbished Canon i850 last
spring for Cdn$110 and am absolutely delighted with it.

See my reason for asking <g>. Time is of the essence - if only to
keep her quiet - and refurb stuff is hard to find locally. Push is
coming to shove and either I find her something or she is going to be
parked in my office printing pretty pictures. The Staples folks
agreed to let me bring in a laptop and try the printer with the
available OMNI drivers so that's tomorrows firedrill.

I bought a Canon i960 in April for $174 (should be $160 or less now),
and I like it very much. And, yes, the cost of ink for Canon printers
is definitely less than for printers from Epson and HP. The i960
connects by USB only. Almost as good is the i860, possibly about $30
less expensive than the i960.

today it looks like my Epson is dying, so I'm interested in
a replacement too, and maybe it's finally time to buy a
Canon... but I need one with parallel port, if someone
could recommend a model.

I wound up getting the Epson C86. The drivers from the epomni5

I like the Lexmark (Z51) flexibility on the one the wife is using -
the Epson is a tad limited in what you can do resolution-wise to save
ink or bump thruput for drafts but it does all work. I used the
parallel interface for her but the USB interface also worked when I
forced the USB port to map as LPT4. USB performance wasn't impressive
but I only have USB 1.1 ports on this mb.
One note on this one: it appears to lock put printing if ANY ink tank
is empty/missing which means they gotcha on that side. BW print is
great at any resolution but the photo settings act like you may need a
5 gallon drum of ink for each photo and I definititely suggest a large
pot of coffee or other favored beverage once you start photo prints -
you're going to have lots of time to catch up on ng and email.
All-in-all, I still prefer the Z51 but the price was right ($79 at
Staples). They were happy to let me bring in the laptop and test
drive the printer before I took it - they had not realized that the
empty ink tank could be an issue so none of their demos was working
right until that was fixed which got me a free load of spare ink carts
in the deal.
Trying to find cheaper printers with parallel input is getting to be
TOUGH! Seems everything is USB only anymore.
