Somehow I deleted the workplace shell icon. How can I recover it?

Do you mean the object in the system setup folder? If yes, open the
"XWorkplace Setup" object and go to the "Objects" tab. Click on the
"XWorkplace objects" button and select the "Workplace Shell" item
(should be the topmost). Done.

And you have a Screen object. The System object was decomposed into
the WPS Shell and the Screen objects and extra stuff was added to the
two new objects by Xworkplace. If all you need is the stuff that the
System object provides, then you don't need to reinstall Xworkplace. So
all I'm saying is check it out.

Why would you need to reinstall just to recreate one object?

You said he didn't need to reinstall XWorkplace. Now you're saying you
thought he didn't have it installed?
It is irrelevant to the real point anyway, which is that you never need
to reinstall anything to recreate an icon.
