- Mr. Message (AIM client) 10/30/2004 update
- Posted by Marty on October 31st, 2004
Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).
It has been updated with the following changes:
* Added the ability to store multiple user profiles and away messages
and select among them easily.
* Added a progress window during login.
* Modified the message rate regulation to allow for faster sending of
information without violating AOL standards.
* Changed so that the user information (including the encoded password)
is removed from the INI file when a session object is deleted from the
Session Manager.
* Changed the queues which send data to the AOL servers to be priority
based queues. Now messages that are triggered directly by the user
will have higher priority than those that are done automatically.
You won't have to wait for it to retrieve all of the Profiles or
Away Messages before you can send IMs now.
* Now understands server rate warnings so we shouldn't be disconnected
due to exceeding AOL server message rate limitations.
* New WarpIn installation option thanks to Martin Iturbide.
* Fixed user profile to properly convert it to AOL-RTF format so that
quotes, greater than and less than signs, and ampersands are
translated properly.
* Fixed the benign "Partial TLV rejected" debug message.
* Fixed popping up to the wrong user settings when selected from the
buddy list pop up menu.
* Fixed the length of the sound file name field in the settings dialog.
You can now specify a full path.
* Aaron fixed a potential crash on startup when ACLCTL10.DLL is
initialized. Users who could not start Mr. Message after I started
using ACLCTL10.DLL should try this version. The crash was due to a
failed attempt to display an error message. These users should now
see what the error message was supposed to be so it can be reported
and hopefully addressed.
* Aaron fixed the error message that pops up on startup when the default
printer of your system is set to a network printer.

Please read the README file before running or asking for support. As
always, feedback is appreciated.

The progress window during login is a handy feature. When are you
planning on adding REXX commands to MrMessage? I've already written
some scripts I would like to use. Thanks for your good work!

The short answer is: as soon as I figure it out. ;-)
I did want to change the way I do sounds first though, since it annoys
me a bit when I use it (cuts out over a long period of time, and there's
no volume control). I also want to keep the audio format independence
that I have now (since I think it's neat to be able to play MIDIs or
MP3s on events), so that's a bit more for me to learn.
I'll finish whichever seems to come with the least effort first.
When all is said and done, I also plan on shipping with some REXX
scripts to handle common things like message logging and message
forwarding. I'll let you know when I draw up the interface specs.
