If it's a fresh install, go straight to 4.52. There is absolutely no
advantage in doing otherwise. With some hardware, doing it any other way
may give you problems.

I am planning on a new install of Warp 4.52 and want some advice.
I have CD's of Warp4, 4.51, 4.52 as IBM sent the whole package in
joining Passport Advantage Express.

Now my question and your advice: (This is a FRESH install)
(1) Should I install 4.0, then 4.51 on top, and finally 4.52 on top
OR
(2) Jump to fresh install of 4.52

What would be the advantages or disadvantages (aside from more work) of either?

Paul

For a new install just go with option 2 - as that is what
you will wind up with (without the hassle of 3 installs) if
you go with option 1.

Just do the fresh install of Warp 4.52. IBM supplies the Warp 4 and
Warp 4.51 CDs for people who have an existing OS/2 installation who want
to migrate their desktop and installation over to the newest version
without reinstalling everything. For those people, they can install
Warp 4.51 over Warp 4 and then install Warp 4.52 over Warp 4.51 and
preserve their previous installation. However, since you are apparently
starting fresh, you can just install Warp 4.52 and go from there. You
should have received a SWC ID and password via email that will give you
access to the SWC restricted software. You should download the newest
IBM Web Browser v2.0.2 from there since Warp 4.52 comes with and older
version.

Also, you should download the new UDF and USB drivers from the Device
Driver website since they will expand support for DVD R-W devices and
the newest USB devices.

As others have said, do (2). I did it a few months ago, to tide
me over on a new machine with a clean partition until I could fit
eCS and it went in nicely. Obviously, YMMV with (eg) hardware.

You may need (again YMMV) driver upgrades (eg USB) which followed
4.52; but the basic package works. (I did get the feeling that
IBM's Web Browser, a Mozilla variant, was a creaky version, as it
would fall over in some web sites for no apparent reason. Think
about updating that.)

I've used every version of IBM Web Browser as they are released and they
have been very reliable. Currently I am using IBM Web Browser v2.0.2
(which is based on Mozilla v1.4.1) with excellent results. What version
of IBM Web Browser did you use that would "fall over in some web sites
for no apparent reason" and what is the URL for a web site which causes
the behavior?

The IBM Web Browser is currently the best browser option for OS/2 IMHO
if you depend on it for reliable daily operation since is tested and
debugged by IBM before release.

There is rarely a justification for installing an old release and then
upgrading when you can simply install the latest release. IMHO,
installing 4.52 immediately is the only option that makes sense.

In this case, the sole justification for installing MCP1 first would
be the case where you are migrating an existing Warp 4 installation
and going straight the MCP2 causes some problems simply because the
installation program for MCP2 is desigend to migrate MCP1, not Warp.
I forget what the issues were, but I do recall there being some.
Clean install, you're dead on - go with the latest.
