- Query about massive build up of no reference handles...
- Posted by Victor Bien on May 29th, 2005
My WPS is much better than in the past but it still hangs up after
ten days or so. (That is the characteristic situation where the WPS
stops functioning but OS/2 underneath still chugs merrily away. The
usual remedy is CAD).
The ini files were clean at the start of the uptime, i.e. checkini /c
/t goes through without requiring the WPS to be reset. After restarting
and running checkini it again found large numbers handles where the
associated files could not be found. After deleting these including a
non-reference to EPM.!!! the WPS had to be reset. A second run did not
require a WPS reset. To be doubly sure I restarted the machine.
Most of the unreferenced files were PMMail ones. Is that a pointer
to problems in PMMail mucking up the inis or did those unreferences
arise due to having to CAD while the WPS was hung? Any other views?

i get many of these pmmail references (assuming they are from bogofilter
interface) & thats just a minor penalty for spam filtering; but checkini does
its reset & they are gone.
why don't you do a manual shutdown right after checkini runs to see if you can
force it to rewrite its buffers manually.

Yes I do have filtering on - not just for spam but to plonk mail from
certain people and groups into the correct folder automatically.
I don't understand "force it to rewrite its buffers manually". Would
you elaborate a bit? As I said I do a restart after a checkini run when
it doesn't restart the WPS. Do you mean to do a restart immediately
after it has got rid of all those unreferenced handles irrespectively
whether it restarts the WPS?

I thought you weren't seeing CHECKINI clear up the unreferenced handles but I
see by rereading
that is not your problem.
As far as I can tell, the pmmbogofilter does indeed generate these handles, I
have not found them to be a problem other than inflating the size of my INI;
once every 6 months or so I run CHECKINI to clean things up.

What I was wondering whether all that clag up was the reason for my
WPS getting unstable and finally falling over about ten days or so... 6
months would be an eternity here. I think I have to go through a
thorough checkini cycle every week or so - to shutdown and restart
before the WPS falls over.

Have not seen WPS instability. I run a cleanup to keep the size of the INI
under 2 megs.
I see a ton of PMMail handles every time so these aren't your problem (a wild
guess that some of your other cleaned garbage is though).
