Hi,
I used jedit <http://www.jedit.org> several times. I don't know if
latest version will still work with OS/2 Java?

I don't know of one. I've sometimes thought of writing one, but the problem
is that to enable display of Unicode, you'd have to write a replacement MLE
control, which is a task that's currently beyond my skills.
OTOH, it's not an editor in the standard sense - it can't open or write to
files (it's purely a clipboard-only app) - but you can use ConText to
convert UTF-8 (or almost any other) text to a wide variety of other formats.

Andreas's suggestion is probably a good choice. jEdit is at
http://www.jedit.org/
and it runs fine on OS/2. It's surprisingly quick for a Java app.

Good to hear. We may have a problem with the next release (4.3). It
appears to require Java 1.5.

Perhaps that's why it didn't work at all on my system. In fact, I
almost had to reboot because it locked up the GUI. But I waited
for hours, and eventually something unblocked and it exited. Haven't
tried it since. I do almost all my text editing with RimStar.

Hi Steven
Steven Levine wrote:
It is possible to use java1.5 with an eCS1.2R system but I would not say
that it is that reliable or stable - that could be system dependant though.
There are 2 possible ways to run java1.5 apps
1] Use ar5os2.exe (AcrobatV5 odin-like wrapper) to start java1.5 to run
an app. I tend to setup a program object with all the necessary
invocations eg Phex
Path and Filename
J:\programs\acrobatreader\ar5os2.exe
Parameters
J:\Win32\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\java.exe -jar J:\java\phex\lib\phex.jar
2] I cannot remember the exact details, spotted in the os2world.com
forums, but it involves using some of the "wrapper" files from java142.
Both of the above work with java1.5.0_0.7 and java apps with varying
degrees of success.
I find that ar5os2.exe tends to hang when exiting a java app when using
method 1]
I have found method 2] to work better and not hang on exit but suspect
there are problems lurking due to the "backlevel wrappers" in use. There
can be a big time lag between clicking on something in the app, a
button/tab/menu item and the accompanying action.
I must admit that I have not performed any extensive testing with either
method but can state that while freesudoku runs with either method the
numbers that should be displayed after clicking start are "invisible"
whichever method is used. This game works fine with java142...
Of course, browser plugins will not work due to the lack of "wrapper"
plugins to put into the browser plugins directory. Maybe the existing
java142 wrappers could be edited and persuaded to work with this java1.5
but that is beyond my capability.
Hope the above is of some use/interest.

Hi,
I'm familiar with these options, although I've not tried them here as of
yet.
I would expect the second method to work better if only because it uses a
newer version of the Odin runtime.
The wrappers should not be a problem unless 1.5 requires JNI interfaces
that the wrappers do not support.
Also, any 1.5 specific switches will not be available for executables such
as java.exe which are built by Innotek.

Hi,
Not much info here. What version are you trying to run, what Java version
are you using and how are you trying to start jedit?
Did you check the log file in %HOME%\.jedit?

It's the stable version Jedit 4.2 with whatever the Java 1.4 is. In the
end, I deleted everything, and in doing so discovered I had two
%HOME%\.jedit directories, one with a bizarre character in the non-GUI
name. I deleted those as well and re-installed, and now it looks like it's
working. No idea what was wrong, but those two directories sure looked
suspicious; they may have been leftovers from an earlier attempt that I
forgot about.

Hi,
Good to hear.
True enough, although I can only guess why it was a problem. It's always
possible one of the settings files contained a value jEdit could not
handle.
