What is the preferred Writable DVD drive for OS/2?
Posted by Colin Campbell on February 22nd, 2004

I'm just about ready to take the plunge and get a DVD burner. I use RSJ
CD-Writer 5.05. The RSJ documentation doesn't seem to say much about
supported DVD burners, compared to CD burners (in the file CDDRV.INF).

What do you use, and how is it working? Does it work with RSJ software?

I'm in the US. If you'd care to say about what your unit cost, and/or
where you got it, that would be useful info, too.

Thanks for the help!
Colin

Hi Colin

I chose the LG GSA 4040B because it is very "multi-capable":
DVD-R/RW,+R/RW, RAM and of course CDR/RW - it is worth saying here that
DVD-RAM capability is very worth having.

This device works well with RSJ (within the limits of the RSJ software).
I must state that I have not used dvd-r/+r/-rw with RSJ but dvd+rw works
fine.

This device also works well with UDF formatted DVD-RAM and this, in
combination with the 4os2 Copy command, makes it a useful backup system.

No idea of the price in the US - but probably cheaper than in the UK.

There is 1 "gotcha" that I have found (it is mentioned in the LG manual)
and that is that this device cannot use x10 CDRW. Having tested this I
certainly cannot UDF format any x10 CDRWs but RSJ will use some x10
CDRWs - marked as x10 Extreme - and write to them at x12.

Regards

Pete

I have a LG GSA-4040B. Although there is no entry for it in the CDDRV.INF
currently distributed with RSJ, the default RSJ setup will recognize the drive.

However, I prefer to have the DVD/CD burner also be available as a normal
drive. Here is the setup I use to achieve this:

BASEDEV=Danis506.ADD

....

DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q
IFS=D:\OS2\BOOT\CDFS.IFS /Q /W
IFS=D:\OS2\BOOT\UDF.IFS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VCDROM.SYS
BASEDEV=Daniatapi.flt
REM BASEDEV=IBMATAPI.FLT
REM BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT

....

REM *** RSJ CD-WRITER FILE SYSTEM ***
BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD /ALL
REM BASEDEV=RSJIDECD.FLT
REM BASEDEV=LOCKCDR.FLT
DEVICE=G:\CDWFS\RSJSCSI.SYS
IFS=G:\CDWFS\CDWFS.IFS
RUN=G:\CDWFS\CDWFSD.EXE -p "h:/rsj" -c750000 -b8192 -t2 -i3 -s4

I have included the remmed out lines so that you can see what you need to
change in the default setup if you want to go this route. All you really need
is to lay your hands on the latest copies of Danis506.add and Daniatapi.flt
from Hobbes.

For this to work, it is necessary to have a correct entry for the drive in
CDDRV.INF. Here is the entry I am using (all one line):

HL-DT-ST "DVDRAM GSA-4040B" A300 "HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSA-4040B" N/A
cdatapi ATAPI CUESHEET N/A

Don't ask me why the manufacturer for a LG drive is HL-DT-ST. Anyhow I got
the key information by using RSJ's default setup then looking on the System
page of CD Writer Control. The trickiest part is getting the strings in
double quotes exactly correct. The entry I constructed using the parameters
suggested in Dani's instructions didn't work.

players have no trouble reading it. For example, my son burned over an hour's
worth of scenes from my daughters wedding originally recorded using his
digital video camera onto - media. I used RSJ to make a copy on + media. Our
Toshiba SD3800 will not play the copy since it only plays - media, but our RCA
DRC510N plays it just fine. YMMV.

I made the copy by inserting the original in the DVD drive and using ZTree to
access the drive as an ordinary DVD/CD reader (drive J on my system) to copy
the entire directory tree to my Q drive (a big HPFS drive). I then ejected
the original and used CD Writer Control to attach a blank + media disk as
drive Z. I then used ZTree to copy the directory tree from Q to Z. I also
added a volume label (again using ZTree). I then finalized using CD Writer
Control. You need a lot of space somewhere to copy a DVD.

2003 for about $260 CAD with an $80 mail in rebate. The rebate check arrived
last week. That works out to about $112.50 US at current exchange rates.
Hard to go wrong at that price.
