- xcenter and WPS reset
- Posted by piesse on June 7th, 2008
I have xcenter in the xworkplace startup folder, and it is nicely
launched at boot.
However, ater resetting the WPS (such as after running checkini), the
xcenter bar isn't restored, and I have to add it manually again.
Is there a way of avoid this?
thanks,
Piersante

I use two XWP Startup folders - one is set for "Reboots only" and the other
is set for "Every Desktop restart" on the Startup tab in the Properties.

Many thanks, I've been wondering about this myself.

That worked, thanks!
but why have two folders? Wouldn't "Every Desktop restart" work also at
boot?

Yes, "every desktop restart" includes boot, but do you really want to
try and re-start everything in your startup folder (including those
objects already running) when you re-start the desktop? You will get
more "beeps" than you really want to deal with.

I have xcenter in the xworkplace startup folder, not in the os/2 startup
folder. There are no other objects there...
I also have the standard os/ startup folder with other objects in it. So
probably this is similar to what Paul was suggesting.

Your method will work as far as making sure that XCenter gets
restarted when the desktop is restarted. I have moved everything from
the standard startup folder to the XWorkplace startup folder that only
runs at reboot to accomplish 2 purposes. I can control the order in
which objects are opened and get a delay between the opening of those
objects, neither of which can be done with objects in the regular
startup folder.

Paul said he had two startup folders, so I made a copy: XWorkplace
Startup Folder:1. In this I placed a shadow of only the xcenter and
checked the box for "Every Desktop restart" in the folder's properties.
Now when resetting the desktop, the xcenter restarts "all by itself".
Everything in XWorkplace Startup Folder (RSJ error log, cad_pop.exe,
tcpstart.cmd, etc.) starts only on startup. I took everything out of the
old Startup Folder because I need the delays between certain of the
startup items.

Yes, but the "Reboots only" does not work on just Desktop restarts.

One thing to be aware of is that the WPS restart offered by warpin
when upgrading XWP itself will result in ALL XWP startup folders being
run, regardless of the restart settings. To avoid multiple copies of
things, most OS/2 daemon type progs don't detect they are already
running, I have found it is safer to say no and do a reboot.

This is because the XWP daemon gets killed as part of the upgrade.
If you want to avoid a reboot, hold down the Shift key as the WPS restarts
and you should get the Panic Dialog. Select the "Skip startup folders"
option and Continue. Once the WPS is up, you can start anything in any
"Every Desktop Restart" startup folders manually.
