- 80kbps connection speed
- Posted by Steven Burn on November 10th, 2003
I'm getting a max 80kbps connection speed on an alledged "broadband"
connection (Tiscali say I should be getting a minimum 250kbps). I've already
tried Tweak MTU (from Tiscali)
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this slowdown?
Additionally, ever since I installed the BB stuff, I've been experiencing
problems with my browser (doesn't matter which browser I use). The pages
load slowly, and sometimes require a refresh approx 5 times before the damn
site's will load.
I'm almost at breaking point on this one as I can't get hold of Tiscali
online or offline (unless I am willing to call their premium support line).

Well, that confirms my decision to boycott Tiscali after they spammed me
last week.
It sounds like it could be a problem at their end but.....Does this happen
all the time or only in the evening/weekend? Does it happen with all sites?
What about ftp, p2p traffic etc. They might just be using a gay http
proxy/cache or something else to ruin your internet experience. Have you
tried using dialup to test if this is slow too, if the pages load first time
and relitively quickly, then that's pretty much proof that it IS Tiscali's
fault.
Freeserve were good like that (proxy's), no matter where I tried connecting
to, if I used port 25, I always found the Exim mail server. Wow they've
really got popular, I thought, that's the end of sendmail then... Until I
figured out that I was being forced to send mail through Freeserve. I could
never figure out why, except that it meant they could log every mail I
sent.....

It didn't happen with my AOHell dial-up (AOHell dial-up was more piggin
reliable), pages loaded first time everytime, and took a matter of seconds.
It has only appeared since I switched to Tiscali BB and happens with every
single website. FTP, P2P etc is exactly the same if not worse (P2P speeds
especially, are extremely bad, at a max of 10kbps).

And it's just gotten worse.
I am now getting a max download speed of 6kbps and I can't get through to
Tiscali Tech (they're apparently "busy").

It could be simply a difference between Bytes Per Second and Bits Per
Second.
For example, on a diallup connection the maximum you can connect at is
56,600 Kbps (that's kilo-bits per second), most people connect at
under 50,000Kbps.
There are 8 bits in a byte, so the theoretical maximum download for a
modem is in the range of 6KBps (kilobytes per second) what with
control bits etc. Which is about right.
So if you're connected at 250 kilo bits per second you could expect a
maximum download rate of around 30 kilobytes per second. Your download
of 80 kilobytes per second (if that's what it is) sounds good (better
than I can get) for a broadband connection. It's also over 10 times as
fast as you would get up on a diallup.
Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree and you really are talking
about 80 kilobits per second (10 KBps) which is genuinely rubbish...

80kbps is the connection speed. My download speeds are currently 6kbps (they

The ADSL connection speed should always show "576 kbps" - if it doesn't,
it's most likely a driver problem. Make sure you've set the VCI/VPI
correctly and that the connection type is set to G.dmt - I seem to remember
having a similar problem a while back which was due to the drivers trying to
connect in the wrong way.

The connection icon says: 589, 824bps but I checked with a third party util
and it says 80,000bps
to make matters worse, it seems I can't even go with another BB provider for
atleast 12 months, so looks like I am stuck with it

lol yeah, 5 x faster (sorry, my mistake). Although, they're offering thew
10x faster for £15.99 for the first 3 months (wonder if they'll let me
upgrade before my 12 month contract finishes?).
I did a bandwidth check and the following is what came out;
Test was done at: http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/
Rather strange considering the link you provided told me I was running at
less than half of what ZDNet said?

That test shows you running pretty much flat out for 512K ADSL.
What's the problem?
