I'm about to buy a .com domain from someone in Korea and wondered if
anyone could give me some help or advice before I go ahead.
I've done a whois lookup and everything seems to be ok (although I'm
not too sure what to look for). I've agreed the price with the seller
and will send the money in the next day or 2.

It seems strange that the seller would own this domain in the first
place given it's name but maybe it's just a money-making thing for
them.

I think I need to:
a) buy the domain which will give me the registration/auth code
b) transfer ownership to me (probably using nameroute.com)
c) arrange hosting (probably using hostroute.com)

I did a dummy run using the Domain transfer form in nameroute and got
to the point where I had to confirm payment details then stopped. Up
to that point it hadn't asked me to confirm the auth code or anything
to prove I'm allowed to transfer. Would that have been the step after
making payment?

tried the transfer again but the domain is still locked. So I emailed
again asking him to unlock it. It's getting annoying now! It seems

He must know the domain needs to be unlocked for the transfer to take

Problem is I have to pay nameroute each time I try the transfer so I
hope they will give me a refund for the failed attempts.

Is there a difference between the owner and the registrar? If I've
bought the domain from this guy do I now 'own' it?
