- ADSL connectivity problem
- Posted by Nel on March 23rd, 2005
My sister signed up for Pipex's 250KB service at £14.99/month.
According to BT's website her phone is capable of 1MB. However, their
Speedtouch modem keeps losing it's connection - usually after 10-20mins of
use. It'll reconnect after a couple of attempts but this is continuous and
I'm usually required to turn up every other day to check it out due to their
ineptness!!
Is there anything that BT or the ISP can do to improve the quality of the
connection? (increase line gain etc?)
TIA

How far is her modem from the BT master socket?

supplied by Pipex. The PC is literally a couple of feet away from one of
the points and so no extensions are used.

Yes, 2 points have filters attached. Just had a thought....I'll try my old
filter and see if it helps!

forget about gain.
What speed is the modem connecting at - 512k, 1M, 2M ??
Does it work well in the test socket shown at
http://www.cotswoldwireless.co.uk/wireless/aup.cfm ? if so, the issue
is your side of the line.
The ISP can request a BT visit to try to improve it, they will isolate
the house wiring to see if that helps, then maybe try other pairs or
fix any apparent faults.
If you have a modem or router with line stats it would help with
diagnosis. Everyone should insist on these (BT Voyager 105 for
example)

You might want to take the PC to the master socket, remove the "extensions"
faceplate (the bit you're allowed to remove and then plug in the PC direftly
into the master socket. This isolates you from any nasties where someone
has added the extensions around the house. If you still get poor quality,
it might be time to talk to BT about their wiring.
Alternatively, if all now works well, you will need to sort out the badly
wired extensions.
If you don't know what I'm talking about here, try looking at the
http://www.clarify.it website for a while. They have lots of pictures of
the NET5 (master socket) on there.

The problem should be referrred to Pipex (the ISP in this case) who should then
contact BT.
Using a device which shows line quality statistics can help identify the problem
