- AOL Popups

Called in to fix a friends WINXP PC that was getting slow and had lots of
things happening at start up.
Did the usual of going through msconfig and stopped lots of useless things
starting and removed a further 10 programmes that he never uses.Insluding
three IE toolbars
Then looked at his broadband. It's a 2 meg line with a BT Voyager 205 router
through a USB lead using AOL as the broadband provider.
It is not always on broadband and you have to log on to AOL and hit login.
Then it connects but there are a number of AOL marketing pop ups that
appear. On the AOL control panel I asked it to block web popups but that did
not stop the AOL popups. I think one was offering Elton John tickets.
Can you stop their pop ups or is that one of the advantages of an AOL
account.

rather than "fix" it. Were you trying to impress him!

Why would you say that? He did standard housekeeping, even if he hasnt
solved the issue with aol popups, by removing the toolbar, and reducing an
excessive number of startup items, he has most certainly improved the
general performance of the machine.

Yes, and I recommend all my friends to do this every year as it can
seriously improve the system performance and reduce the desire to upgrade.

No, they're a bloody nuisance. As soon as you close one window another one
opens. I've learned to live with it. AOL does supply a very good pop-up
blocker but it only works on other people's sites.
