- Broadband - Pay as you go
- Posted by peternoon@hotmail.co.uk on March 15th, 2007
My current Broadband provider is taking two weeks to transfer the
service from one phone number to another. I wanted to use a pay as you
go Broadband service in the meantime. But do the providers still want
you to migrate the service and take time to do it? Will I still have
to ask the existing provide to release the migration code and later
get it back from the Pay as you go provider?

Yes, your line is still dedicated to one ISP - even for PAYG. It's not like
dial-up PAYG where you can access different ISPs by dialling a different
number.

Yes, the PAYG services on offer still have contracts and most have a
monthly fee. There's no similarity to being able to connect to any
ISP you want (the way you coudl dial any 0845 service) on UK ADSL,
though apparently there does seem to be something like this over in
Germany, from past comments posted in this newsgroup.

PAYG ADSL is a bit of a misnomer - it is more pay a set line rental (usually
a few gigs thrown in) and then pay per gb downloaded. Best for very light
users.

True for services dependent on BT Wholesale, but not all services.
EG Bulldog PAYG has no monthly rental fee (though you do need to have
a voice line with service from Bulldog).
Agreed. Or as an emergency backup (if you have two lines, one could
be from Bulldog - just check it works for a few minutes at weekends
so you know it is OK, and pay < 25p a month).
