Broadband speed
Posted by Maurice Batey on August 17th, 2007

3 weeks ago I started using an ADSLMax broadband connection, with a Netgear
DG834G router/modem. I'm about 3km from the exchange.

The router statistics show a 'download connection' speed of (now it's settled
down) around 3.9Mbps.

But the various speed testers I have just tried all show a download speed of
around 2.6Mbps.

As the original estimate of what I might expect was only 1.5Mbps, I'm not
unhappy, but I'm curious as to why the router's 'connection' speed is some 50%
higher than the 'speedtest' speeds.

if your sync rate is just under 4Mb/s the line will be capped to 3Mb/s,
with about 40 bytes of TCP+IP headers per 1460 data bytes you're not
miles adrift.

Noticed the same effect, I'm using a basic Draytek Vigor 2600 4-port,
not the plus versio for ADSL2 ADSLMax or whatever.
Would buying a later Draytek that supports the higher rates
make it go faster, or is the max speed, length of line/attenuation/SNR
determined?

The 3.9Mbps is the highest speed theoretically possible and if it's anything like
my router this includes an 'overhead' of about 10% that you never actually 'see'.
The highest download speed *to your PC* achievable with max dsl for example is
7150 kbps not the fabled '8 meg'. Although the router can indeed sync at 8128kbps
it doesn't deliver that speed to your PC..

Additionally, all speed tests operate over the real internet which has all manner
of traffic issues. That'll reduce the figure further. Try the same test at
different times of the day and you'll get different results as a result.

Please help me with something that's been bugging me:
Am I imagining it, or could I have seen the word "INTERLEAVED"
somewhere in the Draytek Admin (or maybe in Syslog)?

Seems to have disappeared!

I wouldn't worry to much about it unless you're an online game player

It reduces the sync speed IME. OTOH it seems to provide a more reliable

Yeah sorry.
I was wondering where I could have seen it displayed on my Draytek

I was wondering whether it has been removed when I recently downgraded
from 8Mb to 2Mb Demon package.
