bt satalite
Posted by Ted on August 15th, 2007

Hello
I recently changed address and cancelled my Freeserve broadband account.
Applied for and eventually got the Home Hub box.
It would not connect to broadband and after a visit from BT engineer was
informed that broadband was not possible due to the distance from exchange,
abt 6 miles.
Am now on dialup and it is painful, slow and dropping every 5 mins.
The only solution seems to be satalite. It is expensive but we have a
housefull of addicts so.... what the hell.
A question... Will windows live messenger work with the phone feature? I ask
because I can't see how the dish can transmit and recieve at the same time.
But then maybe it does, what does an OLD TV engineer know... these days.
Any info from someone using or who has used BT Satalite would help us come
to a decision.
TIA
Ted

Ted laid this down on his screen :
Are you in a 3G coverage area?

You could consider Vodafone's mobile data plan - 3Gb a month fair use
policy for £25 per month + VAT

Jono laid this down on his screen :
or, perhaps a slower speed connection could be made to work?

Yes, but VOIP would have long delays in it.

Often the uplink is via the phone (and slow, but your download speed is
fast).

On proper satellite the downlink is in the conventional Ku band (~10GHz),
but the uplink is in other bands. This is expensive.

Domestic satellite services uplink by the phone line so you will see a drop

Are you on or near this list -
If you are a Skype subscriber (free), you can sign up for a Skype Zones
account. Per month unlimited it will cost US$7.95 (£4.00)
It's meant to be used for Skype phone calls through public WiFi networks but
it works just as well for e-mails and surfing. Coverage is world-wide
including The Cloud in UK and is backed by Boingo Wireless.

Have not tried myself...

If you can get cable TV from Virgin (formerly Telewest or NTL), then that
could be your solution.
