- BTInternet vs. Belkin Router
- Posted by Marcus Redd on July 11th, 2007
Installed BTInternet router (BT Voyager 220V) for a customer this morning
with the intention of then copying the settings from this into her "Belkin
Modem with Wireless-G Router Model # F5D7362-4" so that she can use the
laptop wirelessly.
However, there is no password for the login - it has to be blank - and the
Belkin just will not allow the password field to be blank.
Does anyone know any ways around this, or are we looking at a new router?
Alternatively, are there any wireless products out there that would plug
into the ethernet port of the Voyager?

instead of using the generic voyager@btinternet .com login user her own
login (first.last@btinternet.com) and anything as the password.
I ahve been able to use a dummy password before without a problem..

Thanks Gaz, but that didn't work either.

Then something else is wrong somewhere Marcus. I've been using
anything@btinternet.com (and I really do, literally, mean the word
"anything") and just a random 8-character password for a couple of years
now. Usernames and passwords are basically redundant (at least on BT
Internet) because they authenticate the user on the ADSL telephone number
now.

Hmmm... then maybe I need to find her another router. Any recommendations
for something with wireless that will definitely work with BtInternet?

I'm using a Linksys WAG54GS and have been for about 18 months now.
Rock-solid connection, no wireless dropouts and currently been up and online
for 287 days

Not quite. As far as BTInternet are concerned, the password can be anything.
Put anything you like in there - the service doesn't care what it is.

Just to clarify, this is a BTBroadband service you're trying to use - yes ?

You should be able to logon using
username: bthomehub@btbroadband.com
password: <anything you like> eg password
IIRC the username can be <anything you like>@btbroadband.com
Hope that helps

If you are presented by the belkin with a request for a password then a
password has been set up by the user. It ships with no password so when
you key in 192.168.2.1 you get straight into it.
Find the factory reset switch.
Any standard WAP. But you don't need to do that.

220v.user@btbroadband.com - no password. The Belkin insists on a password
being present.

I believe you're thinking of a password protecting the router itself - I'm
talking about the password required (or, as in this case, not) to get the
ADSL to connect.
I think it will still insist on a password being entered when entering the
broadband settings - it doesn't allow a page to be exited without one.
