- Bubbanews slowness?
- Posted by Terry Pinnell on September 27th, 2004
I just signed up with a free (limited) account with
news.bubbanews.com, to supplement my Forte APN account for binaries.
Does there just happen to be something wrong with it, or is it always
very slow? In News Rover, my monitor says I'm getting between 1-5
KB/sec.
This is a broadband 512 kbps connection, and my max speed for
downloading is 60 KB/sec.

I know there's a group alt.binaries.news-server-comparison but wonder
if it is getting time for a uk.net.news-server-comparison too ? (As
there's already a uk.media.broadband and while this group is fine, I
guess there will be various news-related queries from time to time -
especially as some people consider news a vital part of ISP service)

I just tried subscribing to that, but Agent seemed to find it had no

which suggests Pipex (or some news service before it) has a block on the
newsgroup (mine also, it seems not to carry things mentioning "binaries"
in the name, so divests itself of a text discussion group)...
However, you could get a free/cheap (small registration fee, of under $5
last time I looked) account with www.teranews.com (unlike their high fee
accounts the one I have is limited to 50 MB a day, quite adequate for me
to get headers and text group posts, as I have set a limit of ~100 lines
on most groups so won't get silly binaries posted by idiots :-) Peter M

So I cannot check on posts in 'a.b.n-s-c' this moment... Peter M.

Thanks for both of those. Particularly the second, as it explains why
my initial experiments with free teranews yesterday were so
disappointing.
I use Forte APN paid service for my binaries, and have just setup
News.individual.NET for text. Want to supplement APN with teranews,
buubanews, and any other free binary serve I can find.
