Feel free to pop into my office and see me, after 1200 Wednesday.

Hi,

This is my troubles with Bulldog ADSL slow downstream connections... I am
getting 25-40kbsec on a 1 meg line.

I thought that maybe my d-link 504 router is broken (which it probably is
because it crashes and stops net access a few times a day), so I brought it
around a friends house to test there 2meg bulldog service. This was just
down the road. The test reported 50kbsec on my router and their original
router. I went home and tested and got 25kbsec (isn't that half?!) How
terrible is that? At night on my 1meg connection I am getting 50kbsec at
1am!!! My lowest was 23kbsec.

This is a very student area, and I know about 5 people who have broadband,
all 1 meg... and no one is happy with their connection.

So I rang bulldog today, and after about 30mins I was told that this
problem, basically, seems like it could go on for a while. They said they
could either 1 - downgrade (what getting 25 / 2 kbsec???!) or escalate the
problem further. I chose the second option. I am going to give them 1-2weeks
to sort it out. Then I want to cancel....

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cancel? How can I terminate the
contract without loosing money? I would like my activation fee back.

Thanks,

Shane.

Hi Bob,

Thought I reconginsed the name, I think your one of my lecturers (CS2).
Anyway, I have posted on ukc.misc and ukc.nethelp, and people have replied
confirming my suspisions that the contention ratio seems to literally be as
high as 40:1. Everyone I know are very annoyed with this company. Hopefully
they will sort it out or I have to think of a way to cancel and move to a
proper provider!

Won't be able to come in today, have to do my java assignment!

Regards,

Shane.

<snip>

Of course it is 40:1, it is advertised as such, if you want a 1:1 leased
line try looking up the prices. FYI normal contention advertised on BT's
packages is 50:1 unless you are on a Office package where it is 20:1, but
then again Bulldog offer 10:1 for business connections. Try talking to Cs to
see if the gateway you are on is overloaded. What is your SNR and noise
level?

If the backhaul arrangements are the problem then I fail to see how the
friend nearby (presumably in Coventry again and on the same exchange) would
obtain better results unless they distribute users onto separate gateways at
the local exchange and before the traffic reaches their management centre.
Sounds a very inefficient arrangement.
Notwithstanding the fact that the current excess of bandwidth provided by
ISP's is unlikely to be financially sustainable in the face of universal P2P
usage and Bulldog are well within their rights to route traffic as long as
it is not beyond what was advertised, my first guess would be that it is a
local line problem.

S. Althaf
I am thinking of taking a few lines from Bulldog when I move so interested.

I was referring to the size of Bulldog's pipe.

Depends on your ISP, the amount you pay, and how well they manage it.

I'm not convinced either. I'll have a chat with him in person. I was
merely pointing out that a bad backhaul contention ratio could cause
this, and that was the 'contention ratio' referred to. The contention
ratio from exchange was unlikely to be the cause since I doubt that any
are yet seeing 40:1 at a time.
