As I understand it, you don't generally get a choice, cable
companies tend to install their own modems.

Because VM own the modem or STB and conceder
it part of their network.
Also you may be confused by the term "router"
An "ADSL router" is actually a hybrid product
a combination of router modem switch, possibly
wireless AP etc.

A router suitable for cable use will be purely a
router, it won't have the cable modem
built in, you connect its WAN port to the VM
supplied cable modem or STB.

I know the difference between a router & modem, ADSL & cable & that cable
companies supply the cable modem, just puzzled as to why you can buy any
number of ADSL modems but there are very few cable modems available to buy

(in the UK) to the VM network, thus there is no market for them.

Quite simple, there is no demand for them. Why would anyone want or need to
buy one when companies provide them?

Because as has been said the cable companies supply and install their own.

Probably, but still - you can't buy your own because VM won't authorise
it to connect to their network, and so it won't work. VM lease you
everything from the green cab to the LAN port on the modem.

There exist cable modems and routers combined - I believe they're used in
the US. However the model used by Virgin Media whereby access controls on
the network are based on the MAC address of the cable modem means they don't
permit you to install your own. Formerly (in about 2001) NTL would allow
you to buy your own cable modem or rent one. Later they switched to a
rental-only model. There may be a few people still using their own modem,
but these can't cope with higher speeds and are being replaced (if they
haven't already).
