Cable modems and mac addresses
Posted by GoofBalls on October 13th, 2003

Hi,

Ive always used a second network card as the connection to the modem. I need
the slot used by the card for something else.

Could anyone tell me how easy it is to set the modem up via usb (it has the
port for it) and is there any registering mac address stuff. Unfortunately,
im not in front of the modem (@ work) so I cant give u the model number, but
it was provided my blueyonder about a year ago... if that helps (which is
probably doesn't).

TIA

Chris.

Ah, Blueyonder. Your best best would be to cancel your contract and get
proper broadband from a real ISP using ADSL.

The majority of people have no problems with Telewest (although I have in
the past) - perhaps you are an embittered ex-user ?

As for support, Alex Brown often sorts out problems mentioned on this
newsgroup even if they are out of his normal remit - you can`t ask for
better customer service than that !

How do you know he does?

on NTL you just power down the PC and modem, swap the cables, power up
the modem and then the PC.

But seriously, you'll be sorry you swapped, USB is flakey, esp if you
have heavy-USB users like scanners, cameras etc. Why not invest in a
cheap router instead, and free the slot but stick w/ ethernet?

Personal experience on two seperate problems I mentioned after hearing
colleagues talking about them.

On one he passed all the info onwards and upwards - result: full refund

The other involved a modem going on/offline constantly - result: came up
with suggestions for diagnostic tests (via one of the other techs he`d
spoken to about it). The solution was quite unexpected - the power supply
for the cable modem was shagged !
