- Can BT BB Voice be used if I send it to friend in USA?
- Posted by OwlService on October 16th, 2004
Hi there,
I have seen BT BB Voice and for around £12.00 per month I can get unlimited
UK calls.
No seeing as this is interent based is there any reason why this service
would not work if I sent the hardware to a friend in the USA so we can speak
for free and they also get a UK phone number?
Comments please.
Thanks

There is no reason why this woudn't work in the USA - it works in other
countries.
The only thing to note is that the UK number they are allocated will be in
the 055 or 056 range (costing 5p/min to call) not an 01/02 number

Yes it will work. Indeed I read an article in the paper the other day about
people who travel on business a lot so take it with them to other countries
to do just that.
BUT
If you only want to do this so you and your friend can talk, there are a
number of other voice over IP options available (many for free) that would
allow you to do the same ting although of course, your friend would not have
a UK number.

Why not use Talk talk? 5p per minute to the USA at any time as well as much
of Europe. Referral available if you wish. You get £10 and I get £25.

I guess they would be more likely to use 1899 - as thats only 0.5p/min to
the USA (+3p connection charge) - of course, neither option helps if the
person in the USA wants to call here..

No reason why it shouldn't work - I have mine with me in Spain this
weekend.
However in setting up a VOIP service with another provider they
refused the sign-up as the IP address I was originating was spanish
and not UK. Had to VPN back to the UK, use a UK IP address and get
the sign-on code that way. Draytel now works fine from Spain.

Would sipgate not be a better (cheaper) option with a geographical number
thats inclusive from uk landlines (rather than 5ppm special corp rate
number).

If you think 1899 will hold that rate for very long!

Its still cheaper than talk talk, and even if it rises its unlikley to be up
to 5ppm is it.

More than likley, even if it did disappear, why would it particuarly matter?
There are other cheap (but not as cheap) ways of making international calls.

Thanks for the information Gents.
I don't quite understand the 5p pm charge as I can't see it mentioned on the
anytime plan:

Calls from BBV to UK landlines are free on the anytime plan.
However, BT allocate the BBV user a 055/6 telephone number - so if someone
wants to call the BBV voice user.. that costs 5p/min

Well even if 1899, 18866, Telediscount and all the other related companies
disappeared (as they are all part of the same group) - there are lots of
others offering calls to the USA for less than 5p.
http://www.ratebuster.co.uk/ (owned by Centrica/Onetel) do it for 1p/min for
instance...

Added the Draytek Draytel service (www.draytel.org) to one of the two
phone ports on the router and now have an 0870 number at the Villa -
but importantly calls back to the UK are 1.6p a minute to landlines.
Even more important is that a UK CLI is presented to the called party
- which can be very useful.
I also have VOIP between home, office and villa - which is free to
use.

Not to mention the fact that BBV requires a monthly subscription whereas
many of the VoIP schemes do not. This may or may not make sense depending
on the volume of calls to be originated from the USA side - it might be
better to get BBV with the standard or another inclusive-calls plan; it
may not.
