Can I Get an AOL UK Based IP Address?
Posted by j on November 3rd, 2006

I have an AOL account, but each time I restart my router, i'm allocated
a US IP address. I'm finding this inconvenient, not least because when
I watch bbc news or sport, the bandwidth of the stream is throttled
down to 32K. Is it possible to have a UK IP address?

If it is not possible, and you are stuck with the US address, you should
at least install Skype and phone everyone you know in the USA and Canada
for free (in fact I am a bit envious of your situation because my wife
has a huge number of people in the USA and Canada that she likes to
phone).

There are pluses and minuses to everything...

Yes, you could configure your browser to use the proxy
uk.proxy.aol.com - port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS

Does that work with the BBC ? I am not using AOL, but someone I know does.

Hadn't reported problems (he also has Sky TV, so might never try streaming
video from the BBC anyway) but some servers still get the 'true' IP (and
thus would not be 'spoofed' by a UK proxy...
