- Can I plug the Ethernet cable into another PC now?
- Posted by MM on August 4th, 2007
Now that it's all working, can I simply unplug the Ethernet cable from
this PC and connect it to another PC, load up its browser and get a
connection? Or will I have to set up the Speedtouch again? Yeah, yeah,
I know it's not the best solution! I may even buy a switch soon!

yes, assuming the router will give out an IP address by DHCP, and the PC
will ask for one, of not you'll need to assign an IP manually on the PC.
No, nothing to be done there.
There're plenty on eBay that'll give you change from a tenner, delivered.

They are £5 at ebuyer or if you want one now £13 at pcworld collect in
store.
I think I would rather pay pcworld the extra £3 than use ebay myself.
Having said that there is nothing wrong with buying from ebuyer or dabs or
svp, etc.

Thanks for that. I have another leetle question! This Speedtouch is
connected via one of the extension points in an upstairs room, i.e.
not via the master socket. Suppose I bought another Speedtouch or
similar, can I connect it in another room simultaneously? I'm not
saying I want to do it, but just whether it's possible. (I'm always
curious!) That is, have two Speedtouch routers working simultaneously
and "sharing" the broadband connection.

Absolutely not! You can only have ONE ADSL device (modem/ router/etc.)
plugged into the ADSL line at a time, otherwise *neither* will work.
You can, however, still share the BB connection between a number of PCs. You
either need a multi-port router (does the Speedtouch only have one port?),
or a wireless router, or a multi-port hub or switch between your single port
router and the connected PCs.

Yes, the Speedtouch 536 (there are other models) has a single Ethernet
port.
Is extending it as simple as:
1. Buy a switch with several ports.
2. Plug yellow Cat 5 cable (supplied) between Speedtouch and switch.
(At the moment this cable goes from Speedtouch to one PC.)
3, Buy two more Cat 5 cables and plug 'em between switch and PCs.
?
By the way, I am over the moon with this latest toy! Should have done
it much sooner (convert to ADSL), but I was concerned it would all go
pear-shaped - one hears so many horror stories about broadband.

Yes. Although the colour of the cable doesn't matter ;-)
BTW they need to be straight-through (not crossover) cables; although many
switches will detect the cable type and adjust accordingly, some won't.

Well, I've got one crossover cable that I have used up to now to
connect two PCs back to back. So maybe I'll just buy one cable and
only buy a second one if the crossover doesn't work. These cables cost
peanuts anyway (as long as you don't buy them at PC World!)
One additional comment about the Speedtouch: It does seem to get
mighty hot! I'm feeling the casing now and it's not just what I would
term warm, it's pretty hot!
