Cannot use web browser with Broadband!
Posted by Alison on January 5th, 2004

I have just installed windows XP Pro on my computer. up until then my
broadband worked fine on windows XP home.. I can connect to broadband
okay but I cannot surf the web at all. Whenever I input a URL the
browser says that the page is unavailable no matter which URL I put in.
BT say that there may be a firewall enabled on my operating system which
is stopping web pages loading up, but I've checked and the firewall box
is unchecked on my connection settings. Any help or advise will be
greatly appreciated.

Is it just the web browser that isn't working?

Are you able to access email, usenet, etc?

If this is the case it's possibel that there are bad proxy settings in
your browser.

Hi,

This could be config related, DNS maybe etc

Connect to your service as normal, and open a 'command session'
(Start, Run and enter 'cmd' (no quotes), and click OK).

In the window that opens, type "ipconfig /all" (again, no quotes) and
copy and paste the results to your response.

OK, here are some things to try.

try typing the following URL into your brower (and hit enter):
http://66.102.9.99

If you see the Google page, then you have a DNS problem. The DNS
setting need checking/setting

If this does not work either, then you may have stay proxy settings,
have a look in Internet Explorer's connection settings page, ensure
there are no proxies specified..

I have seen similar before, usually related to USB modem drivers not working
to well with certain operating systems. A good one to check is Instant
Messanger - since it has such little bandwidth requirements. If that works,
then your connection and settings are working and it is likely a problem
with your modem driver. I've seen this before when certain drivers run so
slow that downloading web pages is almost impossible...
