- Can't Collect Email
- Posted by turboaceman@googlemail.com on October 30th, 2006
I've got BT Broadband and connect via a Dlink DLS G604T router by cable
to a PC running XP Pro, with Windows firewall and Office 2003
Professional. I'm able to collect email using Outlook frorm Gmail but
whenever I rebuild my PC there seems to be a problem with the BT
account.
The Outlook Config is:
OUTLOOK CONFIGURATION:
User Name: XXXXX@btinternet.com (I've also tried it without the
@btinternet.com)
Password - correct
Incoming server: mail.btinternet.com
Outgoing server: mail.btinternet.com
My outgoing server requires authentification - CHECKED
Incoming Server - 110 - No SSL
Outgoing Server 25 - No SSL
I've tried disabling the antivirus and firewall -
I'm getting the following error:
Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect
to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider
(ISP).'
Has anyone any suggestions, please

Can you telnet to their POP3 server?
If not contact them - perhaps they have blocked your account.

Thanks
That's run and then???
Call me suspicious but I'm sure there's a problem when you configure
your PC and they have to do something at their end which they never
tell you about. I've just spent an hour on the phone, whilst they
checked everything I'd already done - and its still not fixed!

The error is a firewall issue, or a Norton internet security issue (if
you have Norton).
You just said you rebuilt your PC, and everytime you do you get a
problem. This is clearly a duff Norton installation problem.
Uninstall/re-install Norton.
Your later post says :

How on earth can you configuring your PC affect the BT end ?
