can't connect with speedtouch modem
Posted by tg on March 4th, 2004

I've got an a Alcatel Speedtouch Home adsl modem/router thingy (Model
number: 3EC18505BCAA03 and piccie of it on page 5 at:
http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/pdf/sthome_manual_04.pdf) and it's driving me
up the wall - I can't connect to the internet with it. I have Windows XP Pro
and I'm connected to the router via the ethernet port at the back. It's
connected to the phone line and I've got solid green light for Line Sync.
The router has a web interface and I set it's address to 192.168.0.10,
255.255.255.0 and I can access the pages.
What I did was download all the pages in the router and uploaded them to:
http://www.tonyspcrepairs.com/router/index.htm
You can browse through these pages and see exactly the same as I do
when I access the router in Internet Explorer. All the settings you see are
default except for the IP address ans subnet mask on the Initial Setup page.
What should the settings should be on these pages? and how do I connect? The
manual says something about creating a dial-up but I can't crack it.
My ISP gives the following details for router config:

VPI/VCI values: 0/38 (sometimes referred to as 0.38)
Encapsulation type: VC-MUX
Connection type: PPPoA
Authentication type: CHAP

Primary DNS: 212.23.8.1
Secondary DNS: 212.23.8.6

Needless to say I don't know how to marry up these configs with the pages of
my router. Thanks for any help.

ps: I've already written to alcatel but still awaiting a reply.

Have a look at the following:

http://www.thecaretaker.org.uk/route...el/alcatel.htm
http://www.dougsta.net/sth/
http://www.weethet.nl/english/adsl_m...lcatelhack.php
http://www.petri.co.il/upgrade_from_...ome_to_pro.htm

In particular, http://www.dougsta.net/sth/xp.htm has some XP specific stuff

I'm running a ST530 on Ethernet, but you should try the following.

Switch off any firewall you have running. Run the Windows Networking Wizard
to create a home network with your router. This will connect your PC with
your router.

Run the installation software which now should detect the router & install
your ISP account settings.

The petri.co.il site is good, thats where i got the instructions for
changing
my speedtouch home modem to speedtouch pro router.

After converting it, it acts just like any other router i used.

thanks sunil but I stillcan't get this damn modem to work after reading your
articles. Unfortunately my modem wouldn't do the convert to pro, and I tried
for ages but it wouldn't take the password in the command box. I'm beginning
to think the best thing for this modem is a rubbish bin....

thanks foryour feedback Andrew. To my surprise your link worked, which is
great. I now have PPP and other pages I never had before in the Speedtouch
modem. Only problem is, I still can't get connected. For some strange
reason my modem will not add a ppp entry that has VPI 0, and VCI 38 (which
is what my ISP needs). I just keep getting 'ERROR : PPP failed to create
entry.' all the time.

just to clarify, I'm sure that the flash-to-pro I did had nothing to do with
the 'ERROR : PPP failed to create entry.' because I got the same message
when it was a 'Home' model (and was doing PPTP). I have noticed there seem
to be several different firmware names available and I wonder if this is
connected. Under the upgrade tab my modem says:
Active software version : speedtouc (1003342)
Passive software version : speedtouc (1003342)

When I was downloading firmware I saw:
Gv8baa3.281 and Khdsaa3.2821. The Gv8... one didn't seem to change anything
but the Khd one did.

the support guys @ alcatel.com (well several actually) and they gave me
instructions how to 'ATMF flush' the modem. After I did this it accepted the
PPP add and low and behold I eventually connected. I almost had a fit when I
saw the modem status change from trying ... to up. After that it was just a
case of refreshing my NIC card settings and bingo! It's a bloody miracle,
nothing less. I've been hammering away at this modem for a week. Thanks
again.
