- Can't e-mail out
- Posted by Dave on January 3rd, 2005
I have been recommended to post here with my problem.
Win 98se well specced.
BT broadband with 205 router, all working well except for...
I can't e-mail out. I can browse the web, post to news groups but I keep
getting an error message when I try to post an e-mail. eg
The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'davenpat@btopenworld.com'.
Subject 'Re: Seasons Greetings + attachments', Account: 'davenpat', Server:
'mail.btopenworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 authentication
required - for help go to
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html', Port: 25, Secure(SSL):
No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78
also I get
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'davenpat', Server: 'mail.btopenworld.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
Any one with an idea as to what is wrong? I am loath to phone BT Yahoo as I
have had lots of problems with my wife's connection and bothered them
somewhat to distraction with what turned out to be a computer problem

Why not use the btinternet/btopenworld internal newsgroups and ask
there ?
Your failure could be a firewall issue, especially for the second
error - the first error could be because BTYahoo are going to make
smtp authentication compulsory very shortly - have you ticked this
option on your OE settings ?

<davenpat@btopenworld.com> strung together this:
authentication issues. Try going into the account properties and
setting authentication on outgoing mail server.

It looks like your mail client (presume you are using OuthouseExcess
since you're using that for news) is not set up for authentication to
BT's SMTP and/or POP3 server
Did you go there? it tells you exactly how to setup authentication ...

I got an answer from uk.comp.misc and it turned out to be a missing tick in
the authentication box.
Many thanks to anyone who got their thinking caps on

I didn't know it existed, but I do now :-)
Thanks for that. The original problem was cured by ticking the
authentication box. E-mail is now flowing. :-)
Yes, as above and in another post. Are there any implications in the
authentication? I am fairly computer literate, but broadband and routers are
a new area for me now. It took me 3 days to get my wife's computer up and
running through a network card. Mind you, I did have the g children nagging
me at the same time, so hence the 3 days ;-)
that's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;-)

You might find it worth using the cross-post feature (simply add a comma,
and the second newsgroup name) rather than post the same question twice.
(However, don't go mad on cross-posting, it can get messy if one group has
someone thinking your post is off-topic and starts a very long argument!)

I call it outlook depressed, but I take your meaning ;-)
Now that raises another question that I am not going to ask right now.
When I click on the link, outlook depressed asks me for a password and then
tells me it is wrong. It's my account, my password, so who is M$not to tell
me I'm wrong?
Hey ho! another day, another problem. I'll take a look at this and see if I
can sort it out myself. As I have said, I am fairly computer literate (my
specialist subject is getting them up and running after a crash), but I like
a challenge or three :-)
Many thanks for you time

If the mail server is currently out of action you`ll often get this sort
of response. If you know the details are correct, forget about it for a
few hours and try again.

In which case, strange as it may seem, that is quite probably your
problem :-(
When the server does NOT require authentication, but you provide it,
with many servers, it will fail with an authentication error.
Equally, when it DOES require authentication, it will fail if you
DON'T provide it (or if you get the username/password wrong).

No, but I will tomorrow. I'm getting very tired now, it must be the Scottish
water I am drinking ;-)
I doubt that it was the text of the link, as I have had this problem before.
I joined BT bb on the 30th of last month and I am learning about various
things ever since and this is one of the tidying up problems that I have to
take a look at.
Computer operating systems I can do, its just the Ethernet and USB broadband
links that I am not up to speed with :-(
YET!
But I'll get there very soon.
Dave
Many thanks for your help.

It is more likely to annoy people when you post the same thing
separately to several groups than it is if you cross post it.
If it is cross-posted, most news clients will only show it in one of
the groups, or at least will mark it read in all groups when you read
it in one.
If it is posted separately, that doesn't happen, and if the groups
have similar purposes, a lot of people will be subscribed to more than
one of them.

OK! I've been told off :-(
I only posted to this group after a recommendation from uk.comp.misc so
I'll blame them for it ;-)
This is a nice news group, so I'm going to stay around while I straighten my
learning curve.
Thanks to all
