Cheapest price for wireless router/modem?
Posted by Bobby on March 2nd, 2004

I'm thinking of purchasing a wireless router+modem to replace my BT Voyager
100 USB modem. Is there a good price comparison site for kit like this? Or,
does anyone know the cheapest price for the Belkin 54g model (I have Belkin
cards in all of my PCs and laptop)?

Cheers.

Cheapest is not such a good idea. Belkin and Netgear are cheap, but if you
hit problems (almost certainly with Netgear) you are on your own. My
experience wasting 7 days trying to get Netgear to work taught me to buy the
best: Draytek Vigor 2600, it was worth the money, hasn't missed a bit since
May installation.

I can confirm that it's very good, but note that the basic 2600 isn't
wireless. You can add a separate wireless unit later, as I did (and it needn't
even be from the same manufacturer), but the 2600G is the one which has
wireless included.

After careful thought and consideration Bobby typed:
for price comparison use www.pricerunner.co.uk

Just a comment about routers with wireless capability. There have been
various threads here suggesting that it is better to have a separate
wireless access point (if you need one) as then the router can be placed
anywhere out of the way and the WAP mounted wherever it gives the best
range.
I have a Vigor 2600WE and it has to be positioned with regard to the
wireless part which is a pain.
That said I havent had a single problem with it since November when it
was installed

And if external, is the aerial removable (so you could buy a new aerial with a
longer lead)
