Cheapest way to get ADSL for 6 months?
Posted by Oliver Keating on January 11th, 2004

I will be moving to a place that I don't intend to stay for more than 6
months.

But I do want broadband.

Most companies want you to sign up to a minimum 12 month contract, so
presumably after you cancel after 6months you have to pay them a lump sum
relating to how much you have to pay for the remaining time?

This would mean the monthly charge is effectively doubled.

Should I just look for the cheapest broadband supplier (looks like Pipex),
or are there some companies that sport lower term contracts?

I do have all my own equipment so I don't care about that!

You can have a monthly contract with PlusNet with no penalty clauses for
cancellation - BUT you will have to pay an actuation fee of £70 up front AND
provide your own ADSL modem or router (which, of course, you can take to
your next place).

Lots and lots of providers offer monthly contract.
I'd recommend plusnet, who do, and I've had very good performance from.
I'd be very appreciative if you'd enter "mauve" as the referrer if you
decide to go with plusnet.
They are not utterly the cheapest, but they have a lot of usefull add-ons,
for very little extra.

Most places pass on the activation fee (that they are charged by BT)
in some manner.
Either explicitly up front, or as part of the monthly fee.
Some "1 month contract" offers in the small print say that if you
cancel within a year, the connection fee will be charged then.

I would, but I honestly believe they are the best balance of price and

Good response to any queries I have had to the customer service team,
news server at least has plans to upgrade to decent binary coverage, decent
amount of webspace, CGI/shell server, options for more IP addresses free
if you need them, web-based admin tool so that you can alter any details
you need to, dial-up backup access, ...

Try V21 £19.99 a month, monthly contracts, email, webspace etc they can
provide the gear or you can do it yourself. Or there's Tiscali's reduced BB
for £15 a month.
