- Confused... All in one Wireless Router and ADSL Modem
- Posted by Alan Cole on October 21st, 2004
I'm about to buy an all in one ADSL modem and wireless router... Was
going to get the Dynamode R-ADSL-C4WG but it is out of stock at eBuyer,
so I've been looking for alternatives, but half the time can't work out
which ones are just wireless routers and which ones have a built in ADSL
modem as well.
Does anyone have any recommendations on suitable (and as cheap as
possible) options... I want to order it NOW as I've just received an
e-mail from PlusNet saying that my Broadband connection has been
activated..... exciting times!!
I'll be using it in conjunction with a Mac with built in Airport Card
(802.11g standard) if that makes any difference

Yes, I have used it and it works fine. Routers are not operating-system
dependent, so a Mac won't present a problem! There will be others out there
but that's the only 802.11g all-in-one product I've had experience with, and
cheaper than most alternatives.

3Com 3CRWE754G72
I bought it from Misco for £77 delivered including a free PCMCIA card but
they appear to be out of stock at the moment. I'd recommend it.
Some others that I considered included:
D-Link DSLG604-T
Linksys WAG54G
Belkin F5D7630
Netgear DG834G
USRobotics USR019106

Brilliant, thats what I needed.... I've just been looking at the Belkin
you suggested. I'll look the others up now... The cheapest so far is
still the one Dominic recommended... and it has a USB port on it! Never
heard of the manufacturer though.

Look at www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk. They very clearly distinguish between the
ADSL wireless modem/routers and the cable (no ADSL modem) wireless routers.

I'd agree with that one being good.
But the one Dominic suggested is cheaper (although the price excludes
VAT) if you don't want the bundled PCMCIA card.

Hmmm. For the sake of a couple of quid, I think I'd rather go with
known-name rather than no-name.
And if, for instance, you choose the D-Link bundle from Misco for £3.82
more than the no-name suggestion, you can sell the 'free' card on ebay - £20
seems to be the going rate.
YMMV EOE etc. etc.

I set up that Belkin model (bought from Ebuyer, but some months ago
and the client wanted it fast so didn't hunt high and low for a 50p
saving
Works well, supporting his office PC (Dell, using cable)
and a couple of other PCs using USB wireless adaptors (Belkin's own
with fairly long cables, which allows for positioning for best sigs)

The unbranded product is often based on the same core as the branded
