Confused: new to broadband and networking
Posted by Jeff Barry on August 12th, 2004

Hi guys,

The more I read up on this subject the more confused I get but for
those who like mensa type puzzles I would be greatful if you could
shed some light on this scenario -

Current set up: computer with ethernet port, usb ports and a wireless
device, using ntl dial-up. To complicate things I recently bought a
Belkin wireless F5D7230-4 cable/dsl router ready to build a home
network.

What I would like to do is to ditch NTL and go back to BT and use an
ADSL provider such as Metronet. I gather I would need a broadband ADSL
modem (with ethernet connection) that would work with the router. This
is where I get confused, with trying to find a suitable modem and
trying to work out what to connect to what!

Anyone take pity on me and offer any advice? Anyone had a similiar
experience?

Cheers,

Jeff

1. Cancel NTL and get your BT line working
2. Place a manual order with your chosen ISP, since your reactivated BT line
will not appear as being suitable for broadband for some time after it is
switched on.
3. Buy an ethernet modem (see "ADSL modem router" post for some
suggestions). The D-Link DSL 300G+ modem is probably suitable. This connects
to the phone line (to the ADSL), and to your Belkin router.
4. Set up your wireless connection on the PC so it can connect to the Belkin
router.
