- Connection question
- Posted by P & H Macguire on November 24th, 2007
I have a broadband connection and, although I maintainn an anti-virus and
spyware program, my machine is on all day, and I wondered what was the
best, easiest way of disconnecting when not in use, to minimise chances of
infection.
Regards and thanks in advance

If you have an adequate anti-virus, anti spyware program and good firewall
then there is no reason to think what you propose doing will make any
difference whatsoever.

You don't say what sort of connection you have e.g. direct using USB modem
or via a router.
A router will provide that much more security as it will typically discard
all packets that have not come from an IP address that you have contacted.

Unlplug the network cable or disable it in network connections. Turn the
router off (if you only have 1 computer).

I would have thought the answer was obvious, turn the damn thing off..If
you're not using it, why leave it on?

I have my router in my bookmarks, and it has a disable the link
option, which seems to work, as my traffic monitor stops registering
the keep alive polls, I assume tha's what they are, little tick every
10 sec or so.
Shields up says I'm totally invisible, which it says is exceptional.
You could also unplug the RJ45 link to your PC, ot fit a switch in
the RJ45 connection, if it's a short connection to your router
the switch will be electrically invisible, unless you are using
CAT5 Gigabit.

But no FIREWALL ???? !!!
The Windows one is a worthless pile of crap btw.
How do you think you're going to be infected ?
Do you leave certain applications running ?

All the personal firewalls are crap. Don't be fooled into thinking they
offer security or you will become lax and do things you shouldn't.
If for some reason you run a bit of malicious software on your machine there
is nothing to stop it changing the config of your personal firewall so they
do not add security.

You may think so but I shall nevertheless recommend Zone Alarm.

Feel free, it only adds a few attack vectors and lulls users into a false
sense of security, other than that its probably harmless.
Don't turn on stealth though as it doesn't hide you and it does tell the
attacker you are running a firewall so they have those extra attack vectors
to play with.
