Connection sharing question ?
Posted by Alex on October 1st, 2003

Hey Guys

I have just ordered Pipex "solo 2 go" and am getting an Alcatel 330 usb
modem as part of the deal, I have 2 PC`s and want them both to have
independent access to the internet. I used to have them connected using
10/100 network cards and a crossover cable, but this caused problems as I
had to have both computers on to use the second one online with ICS.
If i got a cheap USB 4 port hub, could i connect both systems to the modem -
and if so, could they both be used online at the same time ? - or is it a
case of buying a modem/router.

Thanks - AJ

AJ,
can't have two PC's connected independently without a 'router', (think about
the descriptive name: 'router').
Get ADSL wires only and buy your own ADSLmodem/router.
Regards,
Martin

(I went with Pipex in Feb, and i`m happy with the service)

I got the Alcatel modem as well, but suffered quite frequent reboots,
which in turn would knock the missus offline (which was running off a
proxy server on my machine) - I bought a cheapo router / modem from
ebuyer and I haven`t had any problems since :-)

There`s one that`s only recently gone out of stock on their site,
quickfind code = 48449 - it`s a 4 port modem / router, and it`s £32.98
which may do the job for you - I have a different model that seems to
have less support than the current one on offer, but which has still
given me no problems.
