could not create entry (" + Speedtouch connection + ")

I should be using Wanadoo broadband by now but no such luck.
I could not get the Speedtouch 330 external modem to work with the
Windows 98 SE on my old Tiny PC.

Wanadoo support team gave me an extra month on my 12 month contract, to
give me chance to upgrade. Speedtouch is meant to work with Windows
98, but I took their word that that was the likely cause of my
problems.

I was due a new PC anyhow, so this week I bought a Medion PC for
£500.00 from ALDI - loaded with Windows XP. I have still had no
success.

I followed the install instruction to the letter.
I have my filter in the right place and I only attach the modem to the
USB port when I am instructed to.

I have two green lights on the modem but I can never get as far as the
Hardware Wizard, which is meant to tell me "found new hardware".

In fact, I can't even shut down my PC whilst the modem is attached to
the USB port, at this point of the installation.
If I remove the modem from the USB, I then get the Hardware Wizard and
my PC goes about it's business normally.

However, if I try to reboot with the modem in place, my PC does not
respond.

I have google searched with: "could not create entry (" + Speedtouch
connection + ")".
I can see there are lots of others in the same boat as me.
However, I cannot see that anyone has successfully resolved it?

Please help. Has anyone had this problem and resolved it?

thank you

Dave

Either your USB drivers aren't up to the job (possible but not very
likely), the USB chipset is not up to the job & your PC power supply is
maxed out with everything it has to deal with before the modem is
introduced.

When a PC boots up it uses the max power just to get the HD up &
spinning, the graphic card working etc, once it's booted up the power
drain goes down so it can cope with the demands of the Speedtouch
(spit), which is possibly one of the reasons it won't boot.

The easy answer would be to go & get yourself a ADSL router (but have
you got a network card, most PC's have). You could try buying a powered
USB hub to see if that helps. Ultimately it's your decision, good luck

Forget USB get a decent ADSL modem/router and use Ethernet. Most PC's have
an Ethernet port nowadays, if not it's a trivial job to add one.

Have you got anything else plugged into the USB ports at the time ? -
the Speedtouch draws more power than some motherboards / chipsets can
comfortably give out, so it could be that its not getting enough power
to operate properly.

I agree with the other posters though - time to get yourself a router -
you`ll kick yourself when you find out how much easier and safer* (in a
relative sense) they make you.

* any idiot can use IE and infect their own machine, but a router uses
NAT so ignores any unexpected attempts to access your machine.

I normaly have my speakers attached to one of the five USB ports that
come with this PC.
However, I removed them before attempting to set up the modem.

The only other USB port that I am using, has my cordless mouse and
keyboard Logitech receiver plugged into it.

Could you recommend a specific ADSL modem/router and possibly post a
link for me.

Thank you for your suggestions

regards
Dave

The Netgear DG834G was a fairly reliable unit, but may be difficult to
get hold of now.

Do search on Google & see what you can find

Broadband Buyer has bundles (similar prices to the other two mentioned) but
with choice of WG111, WG311, or WG511... namely USB, PCI or laptop units

(FWIW, I only have a Netgear DG814 as a foot-warmer/hub :-) Peter M.

Unsuitable for heavy downloaders, but fine for video/audio streaming.

I bought the cheapest ADSL modem/router I could find at ebuyer.co.uk
and its worked flawlessly for 2.5 years - the only time i`ve had to
reset it is if i`ve changed the settings.

They start at about £25 now IIRC - try quickfind code 48449

You could use your old Tiny PC as a firewall using Smoothwall. I have one
with the Wanadoo Alcatel USB modem plugged into it and it has been happily
running for about 12 months without a problem.
