- Crashing when online only
- Posted by Derrick Fawsitt on August 20th, 2005
I am with PlusNet and use their Binatone ADSL modem which they gave me
when joining. I can use my PC without trouble provided I don't go
online, if I do I usually only last about three minutes and then I get
the blue screen.
My PC tech man wants me to reformat my drive etc., and install SP2. I
feel I should be able to get to the bottom of these crashes without that
trouble as its only when I am online that I get the problem. I have
disabled McAfee now and I seem to have got some time when nothing has
crashed, hence being able to make this post but I am nervous it will
happen again, is there anything I can do to try to track this problem.

Get a liveCD from http://www.livecdlist.com/ by downloading it from
another PC and then boot. (DSL, Knoppix, Mepis, Kanotix etc)
Its autoconfiguring and should boot up with internet and everything
working. That way you can check the PC and networking is working.
Download software like clamwin
http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin
and see if they can detect viruses - but virus definition files
are downloaded from internet so might have a catch 22 there
with your particular problem
unless you can get it to work offline or find different
software, or use liveCDs with clamav fitted (like System Rescue LiveCD).

What is the hardware in your machine like? It is possible your motherboard
can't support the power being drawn through the USB port so you could try
an externally powered USB hub.
Do other USB devices work okay or do they stop working when you plug the
modem in?
Any error codes from the blue screen?

Can you borrow a ADSL router with a ethernet connection from someone ?.
Using that would tell you wether its your USB modem or not, assuming your
pc has a network, ie ethernet connection. Or ditch the modem anyway and
buy a router, much safer and much simple in the long run.

simply used my system restore for the first time and that has cured it.
I am curious though why the IT technician who came to look at my PC and
arrange for it to be collected next week never suggested that. I was
always afraid to use system restore because I thought it might delete my
emails etc., it didn't and this is simply wonderful.
I believe is not good and I need a router.
them to you as I am now back online again, be praised.
Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it.

have cured the problem by using system restore. I now feel that using
Registry Mechanic was the cause of my trouble so I am glad I chose a
restore point prior to its use. Thank you so much for your help and I am
glad I am now able to go online to thank you.

consider using or downloading the software you suggest above as I am not
familiar with it and might make matters worse, can you advise me please.
