I am with PlusNet and use their Binatone ADSL modem which they gave me
when joining. I can use my PC without trouble provided I don't go
online, if I do I usually only last about three minutes and then I get
the blue screen.
My PC tech man wants me to reformat my drive etc., and install SP2. I
feel I should be able to get to the bottom of these crashes without that
trouble as its only when I am online that I get the problem. I have
disabled McAfee now and I seem to have got some time when nothing has
crashed, hence being able to make this post but I am nervous it will
happen again, is there anything I can do to try to track this problem.

The other option is to ring microsoft and get them to reinstall TCP/IP,
that might be causing the problem.

Also check in device manager. Have a look to see if there are any
devices under 'other devices' if so they're not installed correctly.
what's more, if they're part of the 'universal serial bus controllers'
set then that also might explain your crashes.

If system restore solved your problem then it would suggest that the
crashes were caused by the connectivity side of your OS.

I've found that this is often caused by malicious and/or spyware. So I'd
make sure your PC is more secure.

I would always recommend getting a combined modem/router - even a 1-port if
the user was adamant they would not add further PCs, and cost was a worry,
but the pricing for a 4-port is often very similar and the larger box is

I'd like to guess that your original problem was caused by a
virus/worm/malware on your system, and the System Restore removed the
particular nasty which was causing you problems. Now you've got your
system in a running state, do the following, in no particular order:

1) Get a adware program such as Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com) or
Spybot (Google for that!)

2) Get some sort of anti-virus (I like Clamwin for a free solution)
and make it update every day.

3) Get a router with ADSL modem. Anything from Belkin, Dabsvalue,
Netgear, Linksys etc will do. It won't cost you the earth, and the
money spent on purchasing it will be repaid quickly in productivity
benefits over a standard USB modem.
