- Crashing when online only
- Posted by Derrick Fawsitt on August 21st, 2005
I am with PlusNet and use their Binatone ADSL modem which they gave me
when joining. I can use my PC without trouble provided I don't go
online, if I do I usually only last about three minutes and then I get
the blue screen.
My PC tech man wants me to reformat my drive etc., and install SP2. I
feel I should be able to get to the bottom of these crashes without that
trouble as its only when I am online that I get the problem. I have
disabled McAfee now and I seem to have got some time when nothing has
crashed, hence being able to make this post but I am nervous it will
happen again, is there anything I can do to try to track this problem.

The other option is to ring microsoft and get them to reinstall TCP/IP,
that might be causing the problem.
Also check in device manager. Have a look to see if there are any
devices under 'other devices' if so they're not installed correctly.
what's more, if they're part of the 'universal serial bus controllers'
set then that also might explain your crashes.

My thanks for the above and apologies to all for the erratic and
multi-followups I have posted but up to today my guarantee of staying
online was insecure and I needed to post quickly before being cut off by
a blue screen. Since then, as you can see from the other thread which I
must have inadvertently created and which should have been this one, I
have used system restore to cure matters. This for some reason was not
suggested by my PC tech chap, I wonder why?
I am now more or less OK but wondering why it happened in the first
place and will look into implementing your good advice, thank you again.

If system restore solved your problem then it would suggest that the
crashes were caused by the connectivity side of your OS.
I've found that this is often caused by malicious and/or spyware. So I'd
make sure your PC is more secure.

One significant "downer" of using a USB or PCI modem is that the PC is only
being protected by any firewall one has installed. As an aside, takes me
back to the AOL support requirement for a neighbour - as their means to
sort out his problems with the USB modem - to UNINSTALL the firewall!
I would always recommend getting a combined modem/router - even a 1-port if
the user was adamant they would not add further PCs, and cost was a worry,
but the pricing for a 4-port is often very similar and the larger box is
probably a good thing wrt prevention of overheating the unit. Peter M.

It can have quite negative results, however in your case it seems to
have done the trick. I don't think I'd ever consider using System
Restore - if my system was blue screening every 3 minutes, I'd sooner
spend the time to reinstall. It's clean then at any rate
I'd like to guess that your original problem was caused by a
virus/worm/malware on your system, and the System Restore removed the
particular nasty which was causing you problems. Now you've got your
system in a running state, do the following, in no particular order:
1) Get a adware program such as Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com) or
Spybot (Google for that!)
2) Get some sort of anti-virus (I like Clamwin for a free solution)
and make it update every day.
3) Get a router with ADSL modem. Anything from Belkin, Dabsvalue,
Netgear, Linksys etc will do. It won't cost you the earth, and the
money spent on purchasing it will be repaid quickly in productivity
benefits over a standard USB modem.
Hope this all helps.

Can it ? is perhaps the question - and the answer is yes.
I have a laptop here, post system restore says it can't find a HAL
file in windows\system32 or similar.
Fact is that there is no windows\system32 any more :-(

I have already steps one and two in place and am going to implement no.
3 shortly. I have had a good day with everything working but a few
minutes ago I had one dose of the screaming blue screen. However, this
is the way I was up to recently so I am prepared to live with that, for
now.
Thanks for your kind help.

Very depressing, one wonders why there is a systems restore in the first
place.
