- Crossover or straight through cable?
- Posted by MM on July 31st, 2007
My nephew reckoned that most modern ADSL gateways sense the kind of
cable attached and switch themselves accordingly. Is he right?
I ask because I've received the Zen hardware already (activation due
Friday), but the cable they supplied may be a little short. I do,
however, have a longer crossover cable that currently connects between
two PCs.

that don't, but not many.
If the cable is fixed and can't be changed you can buy another
crossover cable and a cat5 coupler that will turn it back into a
straight one if it does need to be a striaght cable.

But if it doesn't, a cat5e cable can be bought quickly & cheaply on
eBay. I've bought from cablestar* (Note, that the * is part of the
name.) who delivered within days or ordering and who are currently
selling a 2m cable for GBP2.24, a 3m cable for GBP2.44, a 5m cable for
GBP2.88 and a 10m cable for GBP4.10 - all including postage. I've also
bought a network cable from aquarius-computers but they only list a 30m
cable at the moment.
(No connection other than as a satisfied customer).

Looking at the massive box of "surplus" patchleads of various lengths that
I have collected from sites over the last couple of years, maybe I should
open an ebay sellers account.
How much does a standard IEC power cable go for?
I have loads of them.

Probably you should also have bought a tester to confirm you've wired the
plugs up correctly!

Indeed he is.
Suck it and see. The worst that will happen is that it doesn't work, so
hack off one end of the longer cable and re-crimp it as a straight
through (assuming you have the tools).

Not a lot and how much does one have to fork out to get every one PAT

Always go to PC Worldlyness and get a Gold Plated IEC lead for about £30
to 'improve your broadband' (wonder if they have gold plated fuses?
Thats what always gets dirty anyway)
Goes with the special high speed/oxygen free copper/gold plated modem
leads for 56k dial-up modems.
And of course the £25 'special' 3meter RJ11 cables to the same spec for
your ADSL connection.
Snake oil comes to mind.

Well, sometimes I use 1 pair, sometimes I use 2, sometimes I use 3,

particular standard to stick to.

Now you are going down the new mains colours as well.
Black can be live (US) Neutral (old UK) Live phase (new UK)
Buy some armoured cable and it comes as 3phase grey/black/brown (no
neutral)Regs say just sleeve a suitable wire with blue to be neutral -
what abouit if it is cut in the middle?
I haven't seen any blue/brown armoured (for gardens/sheds etc)

anything, there are many more things than just single or 3 phase

combination fr the wholesalers to stock which would mean they'd sell
less of the brown\black\grey SWA so the prices would go up.
Same applies to using twin red, or brown as it is now, for switch
drops on loop in lighting circuits. Not that many people use it so
it's more expensive than the equivalent brown\blue twin and earth
although it has the same amount of copper and PVC in it.
Basically it's much cheaper to use a bit of sleeving.
