- Czech Republic ADSL standards
- Posted by Shane Mallia on September 18th, 2006
Hi All,
I'm a bit stuck at the moment, i'm trying to find out if I was to buy a
ADSL modem in the UK if it would work in Czech Republic.
The reason being is that a friend is moving over there and I wanted to
configure it all up so that all he needs to do is plug it in his end and
WiFi etc will be working properly.
Any ideas where I can find such information?

Unfortunately I can't read Czech, and the word files at the bottom of the
page are password protected.
Does anyone know if I could buy a UK ADSL modem, and perhaps change the
telephone cable / add an adaptor to make it compatiable with Czech telecoms?

Well......... Since all ADSL modems seem to have a US-style phone plug on them,
it shouldn't be too tricky to find the appropriate lead I'd have thought.
The ADSL standard is international btw afaik.

Why not telephone the Czech republic Embassy in London and ask them?....they
may know a Czech resident in the UK who is familiar with ADSL back home and
can advise you....

Thanks - Appreciated... I guess I could take a cable off a normal telephone
and see if that will work. Its a bit difficult as I'm trying to set it all
up remotely

Are you familiar with the standard phone plug in use in the Czech Republic ? You
might be able to get one from a specialist.
And you'll need a 'power brick' with the appropriate mains plug of course.

What i might do is see if i can get a free/cheap usb modem with the deal,
then use that cable to be plugged into the back of an ADSL router. As i'm
doing it all remotely I want to make sure it all goes smoothly. Just giving
the modem with wifi sorted out to my friend who is going to just plug it in
and type in username/password.
Will get a power converter too!
Thanks

Some of the pdfs are in English. They reference the
international standards.
Of course, the property could be on cable ....
I guess it would then just be an Ethernet set-up.
You can get Czech-RJ11 adaptors e.g.
Reveal Ltd. Country Adapters
http://www.revealcable.co.uk/acatalo..._Adapters.html
This one seems to have a detachable UK adaptor. I don't
know what the filtering arrangements would be.
BTW, wouldn't WiFi need a Router rather than a modem? Or
were you just looking for an Ethernet-ADSL modem?

I've had a quick look, and *if* the provider mentioned is the one
your friend will be using one of the main changes you need to make is
to set VPI=8, VCI=48 (if I have read the docs correctly!).

Harry.

(Sorry for the late reply - short of news-reading time recently)
I've had a couple of sessions fiddling with my Czech teacher's mother-in-law's
ADSL in Prague 2 of late. First off, the setup magic numbers/letters:
VPI=8, VCI=48, PPPoE LLC, G.DMT.
Newer buildings will have RJ11 sockets. Older ones will be a prongy plug
affair, but the socket I've been dealing with also had a RJ11 socket, and
converters aren't difficult to find.
Having said that, the first attempt involved a UK sourced NetGear
ADSL router. Which failed to see the ADSL signal, despite a Czech
supplied Sagem ADSL USB modem working fine. This may be a wiring thing;
the phone wiring in the apartment in question is old, and a second
attempt with a Czech sourced D-Link ADSL model also failed; it claimed
to see an ADSL signal, but wouldn't (I think) authenticate.

Is there not something about which two of the wires actually carries the ADSL
signal - I saw a warning in a Netgear manual recently. "This router expects the
ADSL signal to be on pins 3/4" or similar.

You might want to find out the exact model for the Sagem modem and
dig up its data sheet. Look for "G.dmt", or "G.992.1", or maybe
"ITU 992.1", and see if it mentions "Annex A" or "Annex B" close
to there.
"Annex A" is the ADSL variant which just leaves spectrum for sharing
with POTS on the line, while "Annex B" is the variant which leaves
(more) spectrum for ISDN. A lot of equipment only supports one or the
other, rather than both, and hence won't interoperate. All the UK
equipment I've seen is Annex A, if the Czech stuff is Annex B there
is a good chance your UK router won't work there, wiring or not.
If you get this far then you could spend the time getting the D-Link
to work. If it is getting as far as authentication its problem
is likely to be protocol misconfiguration rather than DSL physical
layer issues.

The Czech telco page I linked to above lists a ZyXEL
P660RU-T3, which indicates the ISDN variant. Technical
documents linked on the same page appear to confirm the use
of the ISDN PSD mask (though I am making a big guess here
without adequate translation facilities).

That also shows (I'm guessing) the alternate socket
arrangements.

See Para 3.1.1 and 3.1.2, clearly both ADSL over IDSN *AND* or PSTN are
available !
