- DABS PCI Conexant ADSL modem not showing up
- Posted by Chris on December 16th, 2004
I've just replaced my hard drive, in the processing upgrading from Win
98 to XP.
Under the old system, I've been happily using a DABS PCI Conexant ADSL
modem. Prior to the switchover, I'd taken the precaution of
downloading the latest XP driver (from themad-house.co.uk) ready to
install on the new system.
However XP hasn't demanded drivers for the modem, and I'm not familiar
enough with the system to force it. I've tried removing the card and
reinstalling, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Could anyone advise as to what I should do next?
Many thanks.

Does it show up in the hardware profile ?
Right click on "My Computer" and select properties, click the hardware
tab, then device manager - it`ll probably be under a networking or modem
section if at all

XP has probably recognised it and assigned a Microsoft-provided driver to
it.
Can you see the modem in Device Manager? [Start/Settings/Control
Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager]
If so, it may work as it is. If it's there but doesn't work, go for Update
Driver, and point it at the one you've downloaded.

The 98 drivers are the same was the XP drivers.
Like people say, have a look in Device Mangler (sic) and if you can't
see it, remove it and put it in a different PCI slot, this should make
Windows recgnise it and ask for drivers.
I don't see why you can't see it, sure it's not calling itself "Unknown
Device" or something (I have one of these in my Device Mangler and I
can't figure out what it might be!!).
BTW, The latest Windows drivers I could find for this card when I was
using it under Windows are here:

Hope this helps,

The OP never actually said they can't see it, just that it never asked
for drivers. As I read it XP has installed the modem automatically and
all is working.
I think the question should be how do I set up my modem in XP.

Precisely, and the way to configure these modems in XP is the same as in
98, and I should know, I've got one.

An alternative is that it *was* installed, but he didn't realise it because
XP had not asked him for a driver. I took the reference to uninstalling to
mean that he physically removed and replaced the card, rather than doing
anything in Device Manager.

Ditto. However, I don't see how XP could have installed drivers for it,
because there are no drivers for those modems on the XP CD, it prompts
the user to search for drivers in the usual manner.

I'm the original poster with the problem with the DABS PCI modem.
I've now found the device in the hardware manager (it strangely is
described as a 'PCI ATM controller').
I've installed my new driver (replacing the driver already in place),
but don't have a clue where to go next. When I went through this a
couple of years ago, a program called AccessRunner appeared, and with a
few tweaks the whole thing worked. However this time, nothing.
So I suppose I'm not asking the right question - what I really want to
know is how reconnect to Pipex under XP. Where is Access Runner, or is
there a different way of doing this under the new operating system.
Many thanks for you musings.

I have a similar card - which I've only ever used with W98, and don't use at
all now because I've got an ADSL wireless router.
I've just re-read the installation manual which doesn't explicitly cover XP,
but does cover just about every other flavour of Windows. In each case,
having installed the driver, you should find an Access Runner Control Panel
icon on the desktop - which you double click and then press Alt/P to
configure it.
If there is no such icon, make sure that you've installed the correct
driver. It needs to be the driver for the Conexant AccessRunner PCI ADSL WAN
Adapter. [There is probably also a driver for a . . . LAN Adapter - which
*isn't* the one you need.]
ISTR that it took me several attempts to get it working on my system!
STOP PRESS: I've just found a new version of the manual on CD in .pdf format
which *does* cover XP. If you like, I could email you a copy. Is your email
address valid apart from removing the obvious bits?

Correct.
The "WAN" driver is for PPPoA, the "LAN" driver is for PPPoE.
I thought originally thought that mine was buggered or my line hadn't
been activated before I had the patience to wait for the line to sync!
I don't know why the OP would need it, the Alt+P menu gives you access
to all the options you'll ever need (and of course, more).

However I'm still concerned. As far as I know, I did install the driver
that you details.
In my experience these things can go wrong, and I suppose my next step
is to fool around installing and uninstalling various drivers. Still, I
still wonder if I'm missing a trick somewhere. Can/should AccessRunner
be installed separately, perhaps?
Kind regards.

turning the machine on and off it automatically detected that I lacked a
driver and went through the usual installation process. Did this a
couple of times with a couple of different drivers (from the Net, and
off my original CD). As before, all seemed to go ok, but still no sign
of Access Runner)
On further examination of the system, there does seem to be one small
thing that's a bit odd. When I go into Control Panel and System, I find
the modem listed as Conexant Access Runner PCI ADSL interface device
Further more, it's under 'System Devices' rather than modems. (This is
different to what I said in an earlier posting - think I got me two
operating systems confused!).
So, is this perhaps the source of the problem? That the computer doesn't
recognise it as a modem?
If not, I'm afraid I'm completely stumped!
Kind regards....

My understanding is that, when the driver is correctly installed, the
AccessRunner Control Panel appears automatically. I don't think there's a
separate application you can install.

One more thing you can try. Rather than removing the driver, click the
Advanced button and remove the device (not physically, you understand - just
tell the OS it doesn't exist). THEN go to Install New Hardware, and tell it
precisely what it is, rather than letting the system look for it.

If the drivers installed OK then you should have a Conexant AccessRunner
PCI entry in your Control Panel.
I found that it installed 2 or 3 different things in Device Mangler, an
"arbitration device", etc.
If installation is successful you'll find an entry under "Network
adaptors".
It doesn't have to be recognised as a modem, it actually recognises it
as an ISDN device believe it or not. You should also have a new dial-up
entry under "Network Connections" called AccessRunner PCI. You need to
go into the properties of this to put in your user name and password to
log onto your ISP.
Note that this is NOT where you configure your VCI and VPI (38 and 0
respectively), you put those in in the Control Panel entry, by pressing
Alt+P (as mentioned before). You also need to change the modulation to
ANSI[something] (I can't remember what the [something] is off-hand, a
load of numbers). Have a look in the settings until you find it.
Not trying to patronise, but it's a piece of piss when you figure it
out. Soon you'll be amazed at the fact that you couldn't get it working.
You need to keep pointing Windows at wherever you have the drivers,
until all yellow "?"s in Device Mangler are accounted for.
What have you got to at the moment? This would enable me/us to help you
more.
